Mallards Walk-Off Kingfish to Complete Sweep

June 20, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Kenosha Kingfish News Release

Madison, Wis. - The Kenosha Kingfish, having won several games in the last at-bat this season, stood on the other side of the aisle tonight, as the Madison Mallards completed the ninth inning comeback to sweep the Kingfish.

The Kingfish were poised and in position to force a split with the Mallards and, at two different moments, had the Mallards down to their final strike. The Mallards, with their backs against the wall, were determined to go down swinging. Collin Theroux, taking it a step further, was determined to go down swinging for the fences. His last swing of his first game as a Mallard is all that need be remembered, as it sailed over the head of Nick Sergakis and the left field wall, giving the Mallards a 4-2 victory.

Rico Garcia threw a seven inning, two-hit shutout, keeping Mallard hitters in check with eight strikeouts. It was just Garcia's second start of the year, but he may as well have been in mid-season form as his starting performance lacked a single blemish. Ryan Orr followed suit with a scoreless and hitless eighth frame, taking the Kingfish into the ninth with a lead. JD Nielsen came in to throw the final frame, and was able to retire two hitters, but allow one run to cross after Brian Rodemoyer singled home Anthony Gonsolin.

A storyline that could only appear in a Hollywood film then unfolded. The next batter, Jason Goldstein, a collegiate teammate of Nielsen at the University of Illinois, was due up. Kingfish Manager Duffy Dyer relieved Nielsen to turn to Brett Shimanovsky. Shimanovsky, however, also had a relation with Goldstein as the two happened to be High School teammates at Highland Park High School in Illinois. Goldstein smacked a single off of Shimanovsky, putting runners at first and second. After working a full count, and taking Shimanovsky deep into the at-bat, Collin Theroux drove the payoff pitch to the porch in left. Those runs are the only runs Shimanovsky has allowed all season.

The Kingfish, offensively, could only muster two runs off of what was another fantastic pitching performance by the Mallards staff. Mitch Gasbarro had a 2-3 evening, Bobby Shepaprd went 1-3 with an RBI double, and Zach Weigel plated a run via a sacrifice fly. Nick Sergakis, Eric Filia, Brody Westmoreland, and Alex Dunlap each had one hit performances. The two runs were not enough insurance to survive the late Madison surge, and the Kingfish fell to 19-7 on the season.

The loss is the second straight for the Kingfish, who still hold a four and a half game advantage over the second place Mallards in the Northwoods League South Division. The Kingfish will try to end their two game skid tomorrow afternoon in Green Bay, with a first pitch coming at 1:05 CT.
