Madison Mallards News Release
Mequon, Wisconsin - The Madison Mallards (7-5) are looking to defeat the Lakeshore Chinooks (7-6) tonight at 6:35 pm to give them their second-straight sweep and finish their four-game road trip undefeated.
The Mallards won a pair of games over the weekend over the Eau Claire Express and started their two-game series with the Chinooks with a 5-4 win in 11 innings Monday night.
Last night, shortstop Mike Reuvekamp (California) drove in pinch runner Mitch Elliott (Xavier) with an RBI single in the top of the 11th while reliever Sam Forkert (Marian) came on in the bottom of the inning to record his second save of the season.
The Mallards led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but Forrest Chadwich (Southern Maine) hit a solo home run to send it to extras. Catcher Jason Goldstein (Illinois) hit an RBI double in the 10th but Sawyer Polen (Kent State) knocked in Chris Manning (Valparaiso) in the bottom half of the inning.
Luke Staub (George Washington) will be making his second start of the season for the Mallards tonight. He was tagged with the loss but only allowed three runs-one earned-in five innings on five hits in the Mallards 7-5 loss to Green Bay on June 3rd. He struck out six and walked just one. This past spring with the Colonials, Staub went 4-6 with a 3.44 ERA in 91.2 innings of work. He appeared in 17 games and started in 15 of them.
Tyler Thicke (MATC Madison) will be battling Staub tonight and will be making his fourth appearance-second start-of the season. He started on June 4th against the Eau Claire Express and allowed just three hits in 4.1 innings. Through his 6.2 innings of work on the season, he has allowed no earned runs and only three hits.
Patient Mallards
If one thing has been consistent throughout the Mallards lineup so far this season, it has been creating good at-bats and working pitchers deep into the count. The Mallards lead the Northwoods League in walks with 67 in just 12 games played.
Finally Closing out a Nail-Biter
The Mallards entered Monday night's game winless in one-run contests. But that all changed after Reuvekamp's clutch RBI single in the top of the 11th and Forkert's save. They now have a record of 1-3 in one-run games.
