
Big First Inning Leads Honkers to Win

(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers offense exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning of an 8-2 win over the Waterloo Bucks on Tuesday June 11 at Mayo Field.
Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) started the Honkers half of the first inning by drawing a walk. He came around to score on a double from Alex Greer (Iowa Western) to put the first run on the board. Tyler Baker (Wichita State) followed with a walk to set up RBI singles from Connor Goedert (Neosho County Community College) and Michael Pomeroy (Grand Canyon University) to give Rochester a 3-0 lead. Tucker Tharp (Kansas) and Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) each picked up RBIs later in the inning and the Honkers took advantage of a pair of errors committed by the Bucks defense to jump ahead to a seven-run advantage after just one inning of play. Waterloo starting pitcher Kyle Kramp allowed seven runs, four earned, while recording just one out.
Waterloo got on the board in the top of the second inning as Tyler Peyton grounded out to score Pat McKenzie. The run was scored off of Honkers starter Tyler Eppler (Sam Houston State.) Eppler, who was announced the as the starting pitcher just an hour before the game started, allowed one run on three hits in three innings of work in his first start of the season.
The Honkers added a run in the bottom of the third when Burgess drove a double to deep center field to score Hanwahine with two outs in the inning. Hanwahine scored two runs on the night as he returned to the leadoff spot for Rochester.
Alex Tenorio (Menlo College) earned his first win (1-0) of the season for the Honkers. He allowed one run on four hits in four innings of work in relief. Brian Schwarzbach (Pennsylvania) pitched a perfect eighth inning and Quinn Carpenter (Iowa Western) followed with a scoreless ninth inning.
Pomeroy led the Honkers offense by going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Baker and Goedert each collected a pair of hits on the night.
Rochester (7-7) will travel to Waterloo (8-5) to play a pair of games to conclude the three-game series. Mason Pingel (Western Illinois) is slated to make the start for the 1:05 p.m. game on Wednesday June 12. Taylor Byrd (Nicholls St.) is the scheduled starter for the Bucks. The Honkers will return to Mayo Field for a four-game home stand with Thunder Bay and Alexandria that will begin on Friday, June 14.
