Rox Early Lead Defeats Thunder Bay 11-8

Thunder Bay, Ontario - The St. Cloud Rox went head-to-head Tuesday night with the Thunder Bay Border Cats to kick-off a three game series. The Rox took an early 1-0 lead to defeat the Border Cats 11-8.

Chris Paul (So., University of California) made his first at-bat count for the Rox as he swung at the first pitch hitting a home run to put the Rox up 1-0 over Thunder Bay.

The Border Cats would tie the game up in the bottom of the third inning off a single by third baseman Jason Vosler.

In the top of the fourth Blake Headley (So., University of Nebraska) and Conor Keniry (Jr., Wake Forest University) both earned walks to start the inning for St. Cloud. Dustin Breshears (So., St. John's University NY) would follow reaching on an error by the first baseman as Keniry advanced to third and Headley scored taking a 2-1 lead. Off a wild pitch Breshears would move to second and then on two outs Paul would show up again, this time hitting a single to score Keniry for a 3-1 lead over the Border Cats. The Rox final run in the inning making it a 4-1 game was off a single by Tim Colwell (Jr., North Dakota State University) bringing Breshears home from third.

Thunder Bay would then score a run in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game up 4-4.

The Rox would again take the lead in the sixth as Chris Paul was hit by a pitch to be the first to get on base and then stole second and then advance to third. A wild pitch was then thrown allowing Paul to score making it a 5-4 game. The Rox were again in a two out situation as Daniel Comstock (Fr., Menlo College) earned a walk and was followed with a home run by Adam Martin (Jr., Western Carolina University) extending the lead 7-4.

St. Cloud continued to swing the bats in the seventh inning as Charlie Morgan (Jr., Wake Forest University) hit a double and Devin Pearson (Fr., University of California) hit a single. Paul followed with a walk to load the bases for the Rox. A wild pitch again would score two runs for St. Cloud to yet again extend the Rox lead 9-4.

It was Keniry batting a single as the Rox were in yet another two out situation keeping them alive in the eighth inning. Breshears would hit a single but advance to second and score Keniry as the Thunder Bay right fielder committed an error. Morgan would follow with a single and Breshears would score on a wild pitch making it a 11-4 game.

The Border Cats would give the Rox battle at the end scoring two runs in the eighth and another two runs in the bottom of the ninth but fell short by a final score of 11-8.

Tyler Wolfe (Fr., DMACC) came into the game pitching 3.0 innings as a relief pitcher to earn the win and his first of the season. Making the start on the mound for the Rox was Dalton Sawyer (Fr., University of Minnesota) pitching 4.0 innings of work. John Oltman (R-Fr., Creighton University) and Jordan Talbot (Fr., University of California) also saw action in the game each pitching 1.0 innings.

The Rox (7-7, 7-7 North) and the Thunder Bay Border Cats (6-8, 6-8 North) will be back in action Wednesday at Subway Field for game two of a three game series. The first pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. CT.

St. Cloud will be back at Joe Faber Field June 15-16 as they host the Willmar Stingers. Game times are slated for 6:05 p.m. and 3:05 p.m. respectively. Saturday will be a Baseball Glove Giveaway presented by Central Minnesota Credit Union with the first 250 kids 12 and under receiving the giveaway. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. so show up early and play catch on the field from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

It will also be "Ultimate Saturdays" where if you bring your ticket to the Ultimate Sports Bar & Grill after Saturday's home game you will receive a buy one, get one free drink of your choice (only redeemable the night of the game). The Rox' Sunday's game will be a Father's Day and Men's Health Day presented by Adult & Pediatric Urology. The first 250 kids 12 and under will receive a blue baseball. There will also be a player jersey auction with all proceeds benefiting Men's Health. Coborn's Kids' Day is on Sunday as kids will have the opportunity to run the bases and get autographs on the field after the game.
