Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, Wis. - Handed their first loss of the season on Monday, the Madison Mallards (5-1) will look to rebound with a victory over the Lakeshore Chinooks (4-3) Tuesday evening at Kapco Park. Tonight's contest will conclude a two-game away series with Lakeshore and three-game road swing for the Mallards, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
Justin Hill (Southeastern CC) receives his second start of the season for Madison field manager Donnie Scott. The 6-foot-0 southpaw struck out three batters and allowed two earned runs across 3.0 innings on opening night against the Kalamazoo Growlers, and as a sophomore this spring, went 5-3 with a 3.40 ERA over 10 collegiate starts.
To counter, the Chinooks will assign John Schreiber (Kent State) with his first start of the summer. Schreiber, a 5-foot-9 left-handed pitcher from Mayfield Village, Ohio, has pitched four innings of relief for Lakeshore in 2015, striking out four batters and allowing no runs on May 27 against Battle Creek. He was a three-time letter winner in high school.
Kaelin Keeps it Comin': At the center of Madison's stellar bullpen work has been Mike Kaelin (Buffalo), who last night fanned three of five batters faced in route to 1.1 innings of scoreless, late-inning relief. The 6-foot-1 right hander capable of touching 94 MPH has struck out a total of six batters and allowed one hit across 3.1 frames this season.
Gould's Golden Bat: The Mallards grinded out five hits as a unit yesterday at Lakeshore, two of which came off the stick of J.J. Gould (Jacksonville). The 6-foot-0 middle infielder now struts the sixth-highest batting average (.409) among qualified Northwoods League batters, hitting a team-best .538 (7-for-13) with runners on base.
Welcome to Madison: Tonight, the Mallards will welcome to their active roster right-handed pitchers Corbin Olmstead (North Florida) and A.J. Bogucki (North Carolina). Olmstead posted a sterling 0.25 ERA with nine saves (35.1 IP) this spring, while also batting .288 with six home runs at the dish. Bogucki, a returner from last summer, fanned 23 hitters across nine games (16.1 IP) during his sophomore collegiate campaign.
The Mallards will return to the Duck Pond on Wednesday, June 3, against the Green Bay Bullfrogs on Joey's Song Epilepsy Awareness Night. Mallards players will wear purple jerseys to be auctioned off during the game. There will also be a pre-game skydiving and tandem skydive giveaway presented by Great Lakes Skydiving.
