Madison Mallards News Release
Wausau, WI - July 10, 2013. The Madison Mallards (6-2, 27-14) withstood a late surge from the Wisconsin Woodchucks (5-3, 18-24) Wednesday night and hung on to win by a score of 9-7 for their fourth-consecutive victory.
The Woodchucks loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth with the scored at 9-5 against Jack Livingston (Northwestern). After an RBI fielder's choice and an RBI single, Hunter May (UNC-Charlotte) came in and induced a groundout to second baseman John LaPrise (Virginia) to end the threat.
May pitched a quick, 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his ninth save of the season.
The Mallards scattered 13 hits - 12 of which were singles - and spread their nine runs over five innings to come away with the victory.
Mallards starter Greg Welsh (Penn State) nearly made it through the seventh inning, but was relieved by Ben Neumann (Northern Illinois) with a runner on second with two outs in the inning with the score 7-5. Neumann induced a grounder to deep short to get out of the inning.
Welsh gave up nine hits in his 6.2 innings of work and allowed five runs (four earned) on one walk and four strikeouts.
Offensively, the Mallards scored two runs in the first, fourth, fifth and eighth innings while adding one in the seventh.
The Woodchucks evened things up in the second, pulled within three in the fifth and pulled within two in the seventh and eighth innings. Austin Diemer (Cal State Fullerton) hit a two-run jack off of Welsh in the second to put the Woodchucks on the board.
Tate Matheny (Missouri State) provided the Mallards with the only multiple base hit by leading off the fifth with a double. He finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. LaPrise went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs and Drew Weeks (North Florida) went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead the team.
The Mallards return to the "Duck Pond" Thursday for the second game of a two-game series with the Woodchucks. Thursday's game is scheduled for a 7:05 pm start.
