Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, Wis. - After one of their most remarkable comeback performances in recent memory Saturday night at the Duck Pond, the Madison Mallards (14-11) will eye their fifth consecutive victory Sunday afternoon against the Wisconsin Woodchucks (9-15) to conclude a three-game weekend home-stand. Today will feature Stoddard's Country Grove Market Father's Day Raffle and a Physicians Plus Mini Pennant Giveaway. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
Nate Hoffmann (Middle Tennessee State) will seek out his third quality start of the 2015 season as today's starting pitcher for the Mallards. The 6-foot-2 right hander from Sun Prairie, Wis., tallied five strong innings with just one run allowed in Madison's June 15 victory at Battle Creek, a performance that ran his record up to 2-0 and ERA down to 3.21 entering today's contest. Through three outings, Hoffmann struts a 69 percent first-pitch strike rate and 7.1 K/9 ratio.
To counter, the Woodchucks will call upon Simon Mathews (Georgetown) to douse Madison's re-ignited lineup in his fourth start of the summer. Mathews, a 6-foot-2 right-handed pitcher originally from West Haven, Conn., stomached a losing decision on June 15 against the Green Bay Bullfrogs, a game in which he allowed two earned runs on 10 hits across six frames. Overall, the Georgetown product is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and strikeout-to-walk ratio of 8:1.
Gonsolin's Hit Parade - Anthony Gonsolin's (St. Mary's College) sweltering summer campaign pressed onward Saturday night, churning out two singles in four at-bats while also contributing with a run scored. It was the third consecutive game in which Gonsolin tabbed multiple base-knocks (and fifth in his last six games). The 6-foot-2 outfielder/designated hitter now owns a scintillating .345 batting average and .946 OPS across 84 at-bats.
Bower-ful Command - Matt Bower (Washington State) cashed in his third quality start of the season yesterday, allowing two runs across 6.1 frames despite failing to tally a strikeout. The 6-foot-5 southpaw threw 62 of 93 pitches for strikes (66.7%), however, which solidified his season strike rate at an impressive 66.4 percent.
Sunday's Roster Moves - The Mallards have waived right-handed pitcher/designated hitter Corbin Olmstead (North Florida). The 6-foot-5 junior-to-be posted a sterling 1.28 ERA and 28:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 21 innings this summer out of Madison's bullpen and went 3-for-22 (.136) with a pair of doubles in 22 at-bats.
