Madison Mallards News Release
WAUSAU, WI - August 10, 2011. After making the trip to Athletic Park Wednesday, the Madison Mallards defeated the Wisconsin Woodchucks 7-4 in front of 1,870 disappointed fans. The win keeps the Mallards' playoff hopes alive for at least one more day with four more games left to play.
Following a game in which the Mallards saw their one-run lead disappear by giving up four runs in the eighth inning in Eau Claire, the team turned the tables and scored four runs of their own in the eighth to come from behind Wednesday.
Madison got the scoring started in the second inning when Willie Argo (Illinois) scored on a single by Tyler Jones (Long Island). Two batters later, Argo's college teammate, Justin Parr scored on a groundout.
Wisconsin countered with one run in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by Robbie De La Cruz (UNLV). The Woodchucks would score three more times in the sixth as Brian Carroll (UCLA) and Derek Peterson (Olney Central) drove in runs to take in 4-2 lead.
The score remained 4-2 in favor of the Woodchucks until the eighth inning when Madison erupted for four runs.
Argo started the scoring in the inning when he came across on a double by Parr. Andrew Barna (Davidson) singled in two runs and Michael Handel (Minnesota) brought Barna home on a single.
Matt Juengel (Texas A&M) homered in the ninth to provide an insurance run and the three-run margin of victory.
Mallards' starter Estevan Uriegas (Texas A&M) turned in another good start in the win. Uriegas went five full innings, allowing one run on five hits. He had three walks compared to two strikeouts and lowered his season earned run average to 3.07. Despite his efforts, Uriegas received a no-decision.
Wisconsin's starter Justin Burns (UC-San Diego) also had a good start. Burns went six innings of two- run ball and allowed six hits. He did not have a walk and struck out four batters, and like Uriegas, received a no-decision in the contest.
The win went to Madison reliever Dan Tobik (Tennessee - Martin). Tobik (3-1) pitched three innings in relief and his only hiccup was the one walk he issued. Tobik struck out four and faced the minimum nine batters over his three innings of work. Matt Milroy (Illinois) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his team-leading seventh save.
The loss was given to Brock Heerdt, who allowed four runs (three earned) in 1.2 innings pitched. He fell to 0-2 on the season.
With the win and the Green Bay Bullfrogs' 10-1 loss against Battle Creek, the Mallards now sit four games back of first place in the South Division with four games left to play. A win by Green Bay or a loss by Madison at any point the rest of the season will result in the Mallards being eliminated from playoff contention before any tie breakers are put in place.
Both teams will now head to Madison to finish the final two games of the three-game series. Thursday's game is a 7:05 p.m. start at the "Duck Pond."
