Madison Mallards News Release
Mequon, WI - Coming off of a sweep in Green Bay, the Madison Mallards (17-10) won their third straight game by a final score of 6-2 over the Lakeshore Chinooks (11-18) on Monday night.
In pitcher-friendly Kapco Park, pitching again was the storyline as the Mallards and Chinooks were engaged in a pitcher's duel. Mike Reitcheck (Penn) was once again brilliant against the Chinooks, as he threw six innings of one-run baseball while striking out three Chinooks.
It took the Mallards a while to get going offensively, as the score remained 0-0 all the way to the 4th inning. After Matt McCann (Fairleigh Dickinson) and Sam Armstrong (Jacksonville) walked to start the inning, Cameron Frost (Washington State) delivered with his seventeenth RBI of the season to give the Mallards a 1-0 lead.
The score would remain tied until the 6th inning, when the Mallards offense finally awoke. Zach Jarrett (UNC-Charlotte) ripped the first pitch of the inning into right-center field for a double. Cameron Frost followed with a single to left to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Bryce Carter (Stanford) pushed the Mallards lead to 2-0 with a double of his own, and Frost would score one pitch later when the Chinook pitcher bounced a breaking ball all the way to the backstop. Another Chinook error would give the Mallards a 3-0 lead, and Josh Stowers (Louisville) would later come in to score on a fielder's choice.
Weston Wuethrich (Washington) came on to work the seventh inning with the Mallards leading 5-1. Wuethrich had complete command of his fastball, as he allowed six hits while striking out three to earn a three inning save.
Madison was able to tack on another run in the top of the 8th inning thanks to an RBI single from Nick Roark (Oral Roberts). It scored Stowers from second, as he showcased his speed on the base paths to score his second run of the evening.
Game two of the series between the Mallards and Chinooks will take place tomorrow night at 6:35 PM at Kapco Park. The Mallards will be aiming for their second straight sweep overall, as they continue to chase the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters for first place in the South division with the first half of the season winding to a close.
The Mallards will return to the Duck Pond on Wednesday, June 29 to take on the Rockford Rivets at 7:05 pm. The theme for the game will be 80's Night, with a tribute to Prince. It will also be Mullet Night at Warner Park, where fans can earn one dollar off of a hot dog for every inch of their authentic mullet. Do the math and we'll pay you to eat a hot dog!
