July 12, 2004 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, IL- The United Hockey League announced today the 2004-05 schedule for its 14 member clubs. The Mallards open their 10th Anniversary season on October 15th in Rockford.
For the first time the Mallards history, the team will play an 80-game schedule including 40 contests at The MARK of the Quad Cities. The 10th Anniversary home schedule begins on October 30th vs. Kansas City, the UHL's newest team. The Danbury Trashers, featuring Mallards nemesis Jim Duhart, make their only visit to The Mark on November 6th. The Motor City Mechanics begin their rivalry with the Mallards on November 19th at The MARK.
The Mallards will be hosting Western Division rivals a total of 21 times this season. The Fort Wayne Komets, the defending Tarry Cup Champions, make their first trip to the Quad Cities on November 27th. The Rockford Ice Hogs, the Mallards closest divisional rival, make the first of six trips to The MARK on November 7th. The Ice Hogs retooled this off-season with the addition of Steve Martinson as head coach. Martinson brings a winning reputation to the Hogs after compiling a 434-138-10 record over nine seasons with the San Diego Gulls in the West Coast Hockey League and the ECHL. Martinson won four Taylor Cups with the Gulls as the champion of the WCHL.
The Mallards face-off with Kansas City, Rockford and Missouri more than any other opponent. Opening night at The MARK is the first of 12 contests between the Mallards and Kansas City. Missouri will also face the Mallards a dozen times beginning on October 23rd in Missouri. The Otters also added new coaching blood this off-season with the addition of Kevin "Killer" Kaminski. Kaminski played parts of seven seasons in the NHL as an enforcer before beginning his coaching career as an assistant under Mike Babcock with the American League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks. Kaminski went on to coach the Long Beach Ice Dogs for two seasons before joining the Otters this summer. During his NHL career, Kaminski recorded 528 penalty minutes in 139 games. Last season, Kaminski's Ice Dogs records 1,782 PIMs, fifth best in the ECHL.
The Mallards will play 14 Saturday home games. The Mallards appear at The MARK 13 times on Sunday. Wednesday and Fridays feature six Mallards home contests with one game being played on a Thursday.
