Mainers Win in Extras, June 22
June 23, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release
Just one night before the Sanford Mainers dropped their first extra-inning game to the Ocean State Waves in ten innings. On Saturday night they took to the road to face the New Bedford Bay Sox and got redemption, winning 6-4 in eleven innings.
The two teams faced off on Wednesday in Sanford where the Mainers took that game 4-3. The style of play in New Bedford, however, didn't change a whole lot. It was up to solid pitching to get the job done.
The Bay Sox took the lead early in the bottom of the second. Mainers starter Conor Krauss struck out the first two batters he saw, but Matt Lopez reached on an error by Mike Friel. Krauss walked Max Nogay during the next plate appearance and then gave up a single up the middle to Curtiss Pomeroy.
In the top half of the third, the Mainers answered with four runs. Much like the Bay Sox, the first two hitters were retired, but Sam Balzano singled up the middle to keep the inning alive. He moved up to second when Will Cooper walked and then came around to score when Anthony Papio singled to right. Cooper also came all the way around from first to score when the throw to the plate was mishandled by Nogay.
With the score at 3-0 after Papio came into score on a throwing error by Nogay, Zander Wiel singled to center and then came around to score on a double to deep left-center field off the bat of Phil Mosey.
The Bay Sox inched their way back throughout the next couple of innings, scoring twice in the bottom half of the third on a two-RBI single off the bat of Kurt Seiders, putting the score at 4-3.
Just two innings later, New Bedford would tie the game when Shea Pierce reached on an error by Friel and advanced on a two-out single by Christopher Shaw and then crossed the plate on a wild pitch issued to Krauss.
It was zeroes across the board the rest of the way, though both teams had many chances to plate the go-ahead run. It took two extra-innings for this game to be decided. The Bay Sox had the chance to walk-off in the bottom of the tenth when they had the bases loaded and only one out, but Steven Rice who was on in relief for the Mainers got Nogay to ground in to the 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.
In the top of the eleventh Jake Thomas led things off with a single and then stole second base. Nic Wilson came into the game to pinch hit and walked. Brendan O'Rourke who had come on in relief got John Howell to fly out for the second out of the inning, but lost command. He hit Kyle Moore who pinch hit earlier in the game to load the bases and followed up by hitting Cooper to force in the go-ahead run. The Mainers scored one more time when Papio was issued a walk to force in another run.
Iannick Remillard came in for the bottom of the eleventh and retired the Bay Sox in order to seal the win for the Mainers.
Rice picks up his second win of the season while O'Rourke falls to 1-2. Remillard recorded the save, good enough for his first of the year.
The Mainers will be off tomorrow night, but will return home on Monday to face the Keene Swamp Bats. Game time is slated for 6:30p.m. EJ Ashworth is expected to make the start.
