Ocean State Waves News Release

WAKEFIELD, R.I. "" Newport left-hander James Mulry struck out seven over seven scoreless innings to lead the Gulls to a 5-0 victory over Ocean State on Sunday night at Old Mountain Field.

The loss snaps the Waves (6-7) three-game winning streak and drops them to 0-2 on the year against the Gulls (8-3).

While Mulry was quieting the Waves offense, the Gulls were scraping across four runs. They plate one in the third as Brett Winger was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a two-out single from Ben Roberts. Newport then opened the game up with three runs in the sixth. Timmy Robinson started the inning with a double to left, moved to third on a ground out and scored on an infield single from Joel McKeithan. Two batters later, David Graybill lined a two-run home run over the short wall in left field to make it 4-0 Gulls.

Outside of the sixth, Ocean State starter Brendon Allen was magnificent. He allowed a one-out double in the first but picked off the runner and then struck out Roberts to end the inning. The Gulls put runners on second and third in the second but Allen came back to get a strikeout to end the threat. Allen struck out two more in the third and left runners on second and third in the fifth. Over 5.2 innings, Allen allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out six.

Ocean State had its chances to score but was stymied all night long. Christian Muscarello led off the game with a double down the left field line and moved to third with one out but Mulry got a strikeout and a fly out to strand the runner. The Waves had chances to score in the fourth and fifth as they put two runners on with one out in each frame. In the fourth, two walks had the Waves in business but Mulry induced an inning-ending 6-3 double play. In the fifth, an error and an infield single had two runners on but Muscarello's line drive to third turned into a double play as McKeithan doubled off the runner at second.

After picking up 30 hits in its last two games, Ocean State was able to muster just four against the combination of Mulry and Tyler Ferguson. Mulry struck out seven over seven scoreless and Ferguson notched two scoreless innings of relief to close the door.

The Waves will complete their three-game homestand on Monday when they host Vermont at Old Mountain Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
