North Adams SteepleCats News Release

GROTON, Conn. - Trailing by two runs in the top of the eighth inning, North Adams exploded for six runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth to stun Mystic, 9-4, in a cross-divisional NECBL showdown on Sunday night at Fitch High School.

Winning back-to-back games for the first time since the first week of the season, the SteepleCats (6-8) will enjoy back-to-back off days after pulling off consecutive road victories for the first time in 2013, while the Schooners (8-4) fell for the first time this summer when holding a lead after seven innings of play.

Down by two, sophomore Julian Loret de Mola (Nova Southeastern) drew the game even with his league-leading sixth double of the summer before classmate Dominic Severino (CCSU) blasted his first homer of the year - a two-run shot - to give North Adams a four-run cushion. The Schooners would get two runs back, but junior Bryan Soloman (Eastern Kentucky) erased doubts of a comeback with a three-run homer to round out the SteepleCats' offensive explosion.

Junior southpaw Steve Frey (Monmouth) became the pitcher of record for North Adams after tossing an effortless seventh, using a strikeout to improve to 2-0 on the year. AJ Turnier took the loss out of the bullpen for the Schooners, yielding four unearned runs to spoil a solid start for Zachary Albin, who struck out six and yielded no runs over seven innings. Sophomore Casey Brown (CCSU) was on the hook for North Adams but took a no decision after surrendering two runs - one earned - over five innings while striking out five.

Loret de Mola finished the night with a game-high three hits, tying Adam Touhey of the Schooners. Both Soloman, freshman Jose Cuas (Maryland) and junior Cody Doyle (Cal State Los Angeles) all added two hits for the visitors, while Matt O'Herron also tallied two hits for the Schooners. On the night, the SteepleCats doubled up the Schooners in hits, 12-6.

Following five and a half innings of scoreless ball, the Schooners managed to untie the contest with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. After Brown yielded a single and a walk to start, sophomore Doug Willey (Franklin Pierce) was hailed out of the bullpen to work around the two-on, nobody-out jam.

But the Schooners executed a sacrifice bunt to push the runners into scoring position before a flare out to shallow right tallied the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly. Then, with two outs, an error at short brought in a second run to give the home side a 2-0 lead at the end of the sixth.

After a scoreless seventh, however, North Adams finally connected in one of its biggest innings of the year, as the 'Cats rung up six runs against the Schooners in the top of the eighth.

With two outs and runners on the corners, Soloman started the rally with a run-scoring single through the left side to cut North Adams' deficit in half. And in the next at-bat, Loret de Mola added to his league-leading total in extra-base hits with the game-tying RBI double to draw the 'Cats even at 2-2.

But that was just the start; in the next at-bat, freshman Kevin Martir (Maryland) pushed North Adams ahead by two with a two-RBI double down the right field line before Severino launched a no-doubter over the left field wall to push the visitors suddenly ahead, 6-2.

Mystic would get two runs back in the home half of the eighth, but Soloman's three-run jack in the top of the ninth took that momentum right back, settling for the final margin of victory.

Next up, North Adams will enjoy its first two scheduled off days of the season on Monday and Tuesday before resuming action on the road this Wednesday (June 26) at New Bedford. First pitch from Paul Walsh Field is slated for 6:30 p.m.
