Mainers Win a Marathon Pitchers Duel on One Swing
June 27, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release
Mystic, Conn. - The Sanford Mainers had to go extra innings for the first time on Wednesday night but their pitching put on a clinic and all it took was one swing from the back up catcher to steal one on the road against the Mystic Schooners by a final of 1-0 in 11 innings. The win puts the Mainers is sole possession of second place in the Northern Division and snaps a three game road losing streak in the process.
Ed Baram (Saddle Brook, N.J./Adelphi) was sensational on the hill for the Moose as he turned in his best start of the 2018 NECBL season going five innings allowing just two hits and striking out five. The Adelphi Panther didn't walk a single batter in his fourth appearance on the year and didn't allow a runner to go past second base in his time on the mound.
His bull pen did exactly what the Mainers have relied on all season long as five different hurlers came on and took over for him in the 6th holding one of the hottest offenses in the league to nothing on the scoreboard the entire night. Angelo Smith (Thornton, Illinois/Michigan), Will Kazura (Saddle Brook, N.J./Felician), Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Southern Maine), John Murphy (Merchantville, N.J./Maryland), and Mike Vasturia (Medford, N.J./Maryland) combined for 6.0 innings of relief allowing just a single hit and striking seven batters while allowing just two runners to reach third base.
Harrison Salter (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Michigan) led the Moose on the night in hitting posting the only multi-hit game for the lineup but had to leave in the 9th after taking a second ball off the face mask.
Enter Austin Biggar (Lilburn, Ga./Georgia) who not only saved the game twice in the 10th by making sure a passed ball didn't end it but did the job with his bat as well. In the top of the 11th he toed into the box for his first at bat of the night and smoked a 2-1 pitch deep over the right center field fence for the game-winner. Biggar was the only hitter with a multi-hit game last night in Danbury but tonight got his first signature hit as a Mainer.
Sanford improves to 10-7 with the win, the third team to reach the double digit win mark in the NECBL this season, and is in sole possession of second place in the Northern Division as the last week of June wraps up. The Moose will have one more road game tomorrow as they wrap-up their Southern Division tour at Ocean State with first pitch set for 6:30 on the NECBL Broadcast Network and 102.3 FM "The Legends" back in Sanford.
