June 27, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - After the Miami Marlins selected RHP Brett Graves this past December with the 17th overall pick in the Major League Baseball Rule 5 Draft, the 2012 & 2013 Newport Gull made his MLB debut on Saturday, June 17 against the Baltimore Orioles. Graves retired the only batter he faced, getting Mark Trumbo to ground out to second base on just two pitches and has since made one appearance that included two strikeouts against the Colorado Rockies.

Graves helped the Gulls capture their fifth NECBL title in 2012 after appearing in 12 games for a total of 26.1 innings pitched. He finished the 2012 season with one win, 4.10 ERA and 36 strikeouts. After his sophomore season as a Tiger at the University of Missouri, Graves decided to return to Newport for the 2013 campaign, making six starts including two during Newport's run for the Fay Vincent Cup. In 49.1 innings pitched, the righty held a 1.43 ERA while striking out 50 batters. His impressive season earned him a selection to the 2013 NECBL All-Star game.

He finished his college career with a total of nine wins and 124 strikeouts in 211.0 innings pitched. The St. Charles, Missouri native heard his name called during the third round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft by the Oakland Athletics prior to his selection in this year's Rule 5 Draft by the Marlines.

Graves call up makes him the sixteenth former Gull to reach the Major Leagues which is the most of any NECBL franchise.
