Sanford Mainers News Release
Sanford (6-7) and North Adams (6-6) have had some barn burners to begin the 2014 season. Two runs have decided the two match-ups both of which have been decided by a passed ball and a wild pitch. Tonight was another class between the Moose and the Steeplecats. Nick Poore (Boston College) (0-0) took a perf-perf into the 8th inning only to have it busted up by a one out single from the bat of Luke Maglich (Louisville).
8 strikeouts 1 run credited to the starter after Jon Chudy (Pace Univ.) came on in relief. Maglich stole second base on the first pitch from Chudy sliding in at a perfect 4-4 in stolen base attempts this season. A great crowd watched another outstanding finish on a walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th.
Chudy surrendered a single to right field to Edgar Michelangeli (Univ. of Miami) which drove in Maglich to even the score at 1-1. Chudy finished the inning with a strikeout of Vinny Siena (UConn). Cam Hatch (St. Edwards) (2-0) arrived into the game in the 9th dropping thunder on the batters completing a 1,2,3 inning with a strikeout, ground-out and fly-out finishing the top of the SteepleCats order's day at 0-12 between Josh Delph (Florida State), Zach Lucas (Louisville) and JC Cardenas (Barry Univ.).
2 errors in the 5th inning by North Adams helped the Mainers plate 1 run on 1 hit with Matt Pagano (Marist) scoring on a wild pitch which seems to be a theme for the Steeplecats inside Goodall park. Mainers could not capitalize on a scoring chance leaving 9 runners on compared to just 3 for North Adams. Cory Raley (Texas Tech) led off the bottom of the 10th with a triple to the deepest part of the park, 408 in center field and would touch home plate to score the winning run on a wild pitch by Jonah Philley (Louisville), who gets the loss his first of the season. Raley finished his day 2 for 3 one of his best performances at the dish this season.
The Mainers improve to 1-1 in extra innings this season and 2-1 in one run games, both wins coming over North Adams with their only one run loss to Vermont 1-0. It's deja-vu all over again for Sanford, this time a more manageable game and a stellar outing by both teams pitching staffs highlight another win for the Mainers, 2-1 in ten innings.
The pitching staff for the Mainers has been the highlight of quite a few games this season, Poore, Chudy and Hatch all have a sub 2 ERA, Poore sits at 1.04, Chudy at 1.93 and Hatch with a 1.80 ERA that have been stellar through their appearances with the Moose so far this season. The pitching staff ERA came into tonight at 3.00 and with efforts like tonight's that surely to drop.
Tomorrow night, first pitch 6:30 pm, the Moose travel to North Adams for a quick turn-around rematch with the SteepleCats. Ben Wessell (0-1, 2.57 ERA, Univ. of Rhode Island) gets the ball for the Mainers against Nathan Foriest (0-0, 13.50 ERA) from Middle Tennesee University.
The Mainers continue their stretch of 12 games in 12 days, with the rain-out from the 13th of June scheduled to be made up at Goodall Park against Laconia this coming Wednesday set for a tentative time of 6:30 pm.
