Keene Swamp Bats News Release

The Keene Swamp Bats saw their four-game winning streak come to an end on Monday night as they dropped a 2-0 decision at the hands of the Newport Gulls.

The loss drops Keene to 5-8 on the season, while Newport improves to 10-4 on the year.

In a rematch of the 2013 NECBL Championship series, the Gulls jumped on top early as Blaise Salter (Michigan State) delivered a solo shot in the home half of the second inning.

The Swamp Bats had their opportunities with the leadoff man reaching in the second, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. As a whole, Keene left eight men on base for the game.

Perhaps the best chance of the game came in the top half of the seventh inning for the Swamp Bats as Jared Mederos (St. John's) doubled to lead off, advanced to third on a wild pitch with nobody out, but a groundout, flyout and strikeout ended the threat as Marc Huberman (Southern Cal.) came on in relief of Newport starter Mike Mancuso (Georgia) after Mancuso allowed the leadoff double to Mederos.

Mancuso went the first six innings and did not allow a run on five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out six.

Swamp Bat starter Dominic Severino (Central Conn State) was the tough-luck loser, his first of the season as he allowed one run on four hits, walked two and fanned six over six innings of work.

Newport would strike for one more against Keene reliever Matt Clancy (St. John's) in the eighth.

Ben Roberts (Washington State) drew a leadoff walk and stole second before scoring on Salter's RBI single to add an insurance run for the Gulls.

Huberman threw the final three innings for Newport and picked up his first save of the season. The southpaw allowed just one hit over those final three frames, walked one and struck out a pair.

Each team finished with six hits on the night. Connor Fitzsimons (Central Conn State) led the way for the Swamp Bats with two hits: a single and a double.

Keene will look to get back on the winning track tomorrow night as they host in-state rival, Laconia Muskrats at Alumni Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
