Amburgey, Knutson Earn NECBL Week 3 Awards

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - After leading two of the league's three major offensive categories and leading the league in strikeouts and innings pitched while posting a sub-2 ERA, Vermont's Trey Amburgey and Danbury's Max Knutson have been named the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday.

The award marks the second Vermont player to earn a league weekly honor this season after southpaw Ryan Davis earned the league's first Pitcher of the Week award back in Week 1. Knutson, meanwhile, represents the first Danbury player honored by the league this season.

A rising senior at St. Petersburg College in Lake Worth, Florida, Amburgey stood above the rest of the league by a wide margin last week, leading the NECBL in two of the three Triple Crown categories (batting average, RBI) and total hits. The 6-foot-2 outfielder batted 10-for-17 on the week with a .588 average in five games. He scored five runs, blasted one home run, belted a triple and drove in a league-high nine runs while also adding a stolen base to his resume.

After going hitless in his first game of the week, Amburgey hit safely in each of Vermont's last four games, finishing 10-for-15 (.667) in that stretch. His most impressive outing was a monster 5-for-6, three-run, four-RBI performance in a 16-9 win over Laconia on June 20, a contest that featured 37 total hits. On the year, his 11 RBI are tied for third in the league.

Those efforts helped Vermont go 5-0 on the week, as the Mountaineers stretched their current win streak to seven straight to soar into first place in the North Division.

Knutson, meanwhile, was on the mound twice during Danbury's three-win week and dazzled. The southpaw out of the University of Nebraska fanned a league-best 13 batters while tossing a league-high 13.2 innings. During those two starts, he allowed only three earned runs and pitched to the tune of a 1.98 ERA.

The Arden Hills, Minnesota, native blanked New Bedford and struck out seven over six shutout less innings in a 6-0 Danbury victory on June 17 before returning to the bump five days later to face Laconia, fanning six more in a hard-fought 4-3 setback. On the year, he stands at 1-1 with a 1.72 ERA, 14 strikeouts and just three walks and 10 hits allowed over 15.2 innings, boasting a solid 0.830 WHIP.
