Mainers Split Monday double-header

Wakefield, R.I- The Mainers (18-12) looked to come out of the All-Star weekend with some momentum, after splitting the final two games before the 2014 ASG with Valley and Keene. Sanford used extremely stingy pitching in a 12 inning affair in addition a line drive single to left center field by Drake Parker (Vandy) bringing in Sam Balzano (UMaine) after he reached on an infield single and was moved over by a sac-bunt from Kevin Stypulkowski (Black Bear) to put the Mainers ahead in the top of the 12th for good.

Cam Hatch (St. Edwards) came on to earn his 6th save of the season by working a scoreless bottom of the 12th, Hatch found himself in hot water with the bases loaded after at Old Mountain field, Buck McCarthy led off the inning with a single, advancing to second on an error by Balzano, Alec Diamond struck out swinging for the first out, Tim Caputo fanned as well putting it at two outs with the tying run on second base, Ethan Ferreir pinch hit for Matt Murphy and worked a walk putting the winning run at 1st base, TJ Lynch came in to pinch run for Murphy, Evan Ocello works a walk as well loading the bases. Hatch stayed steady despite the 2 out bases loaded situation inducing a ground ball to shortstop Cory Raley (Texas Tech) which he scooped took to the second base bag to record the final out of the game and the Mainers survive 2-to-1 moving their record to 17-11 on the season. The Mainers move to 2-and-1 in extra inning ball games this season in a 3 hr 8 minute marathon to begin what was already planned to be a long day.

Mystic, CT- The second game of a double header at the Mystic Schooners (17-14) was scheduled for first pitch at 6:30 pm got displaced an hour back to 7:30 pm due to the first game for the Mainers. Jeff Singer (Monmouth) the starter for the Moose, so the Mainers arrived on the bus, with the umpires snacking and the Schooners throwing long toss, feeling like the late ones to the party, which is fine for the Moose. Sanford took an early 2-to-0 lead on a 2 run home run from Cory Raley (2), drilling the ball into the parking lot on a hill above the left center fence and hoping to Fitch High School.

The Mainers would add one more via-the solo home run from Stevie Berman, who was stellar going 4-for-5 with 2 RBI's, (2) in the top of the 3rd, after Cory Raley reached on a fielder's choice and was caught stealing Berman (Santa Clara Univ.) would hit one out of the left side making it 3-to-0 through 2 and a-half innings. In the bottom of the third the Schooners would respond, Andrew Hinckley hit a solo-shot his second of the season making it a two-run game. Cory Raley, finished 2-for-5 with 2 RBI's, and Stevie Berman had a productive night driving in 4 of the 5 Mainers runs. Sam Dexter (So. Maine) finished with 2 runs scored during a 1-for-4 night, Caden Bailey (Georgia State) went 2-for-2 with a run scored as well.

Mystic and Sanford would go to the bottom of the 9th with a 5-to-4 score, Jon Chudy (Pace Univ.) would be called on to try and get a two inning save and work his way through the 8th with little friction, but the bottom of the 9th would be a different story. Toby Handley led off with a single against Chudy, Zach Weigel would fly out to left field for the first out, Stephen Laurino, who's batting an even .400 on the season would comlete his day 4-for-5 with another single moving Handley to second, Dan Hoy would smack a double scoring Handley and moving Laurino to 3rd making it a 5-to-5 game, Aaron Hill would single through Cory Raley at short and Laurino would score on a walk off 6-to-5 come from behind victory for the Schooners to snap a skid of losing 7 out-of their last 10 games. Jon Chudy gets the loss, Louis Concato gets the win and the Mainers would split their day-night road double header with two southern division opponents.

Bobby Ruse (Maryland, 1-2- 4.02) gets the ball tonight back at Goodall Park against the New Bedford Bay Sox (8-25), matching up with Brad Labozetta (Polk State, 1-1- 1.45) first pitch at 6:30 pm as the Mainers return home for 4-out-of-5 games this week with the only road game at Vermont on Wednesday (7/23).
