Mountaineers Suffer 12-0 Defeat

Groton, Conn. - The Mystic Schooners blanked the Vermont Mountaineers 12-0 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Fitch High School on Tuesday night. With the Vermont loss and the Sanford Mainers win over the New Bedford Bay Sox, the Mountaineers first place lead in the Northern Division has dwindled to a game and a half.

The Schooners scored in every inning but the seventh, when Vermont reliever Dalton Goss (Alabama-Huntsville) set the side down in order.

Mystic scored one run in the first, two in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the eighth.

Aaron Hill (UConn) led the Schooners with four hits and three RBIs in the game. Hill had three singles and one double. Andrew Hinckley (UC-Avery Point) hit a two-run homerun in the second to give Mystic a 3-0 lead. He also walked three times in the game.

Vermont starter Dan Koger (Alabama-Huntsville) took the loss, falling to 3-1 on the summer. The left-hander went three and one-third innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) on nine hits and four walks.

Alex Vargas (Monroe) went five innings and earned the win to move to 2-1 on the season. Vargas gave up no runs on three hits and three walks. He struck out two.

The Mountaineers offense scattered just four hits in the game.

Vermont returns to action Wednesday night at Recreation Field when the team hosts the Sanford Mainers for a 6:30 meeting. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com. Frank FM and the World sponsor host family appreciation night and Skip's birthday night at the ballpark. Following Wednesday night's contest, the Mountaineers will play five consecutive games on the road.
