July 8, 2014 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

The Sanford Mainers (15-8) continue their hot streak and continue to play great baseball with a 3-to-0 victory at home against the Valley Blue Sox (6-16). The Mainers were led by the pitching staff tonight once again, Bobby Ruse (1-2) got the victory with 6 innings pitched allowing 5 hits, 4 K's and no runs. The bullpen worked a solid three innings closing down the Blue Sox offense surrendering just 3 hits and 0 runs. Cam Hatch (5) gets the save and continues to mold himself into the closer role for the Mainers. Tyler Barss worked a scoreless 7th striking out 1. Jeff Singer came on in relief for the first time this season and recorded 1 strikeout on the road to a 3-0 victory!

The Moose offense did just enough to move runners around the base-paths and knock in 3 runs. Nick Lovullo finished his day 2-for-2 with a run scored and a walk. The Mainers wasted zero time getting on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning, Lovullo singled to left, Walker Pennington grounded to third advancing Lovullo to second, Corey Raley struck out swinging and then with two-outs Stevie Berman drove a single to right field bringing in Lovullo for an RBI. In the bottom of the second the Mainers brought across another run, Dan Hetzel tripled to right center field and Sam Balzano reached on an infield single that brought home Hetzel putting the score at 2-to-0, Balzano's 4th RBI on the season.

Anthony Elia (1-2) and the Valley Blue Sox fall on the losing side of a match-up with the Mainers at Goodall Park for the second time this season. Elia pitched 4.2 innings, allowing 3 earned runs and 7 hits along with recording 4 strike-outs. Credit to the Blue Sox bullpen, they recorded 3.1 innings of shutout baseball allowing just one-hit during that span, but the damage was done and the Mainers brought in one more insurance run in the bottom of the 5th, again Lovullo got the rally started by singling to lead off the inning, but this time Cory Raley grounded into a 5-4 fielder's choice for the second out of the inning nabbing Lovullo at second. Stevie Berman once again came up with runners on and delivered this time, Berman doubled to left field and Raley raced around the base paths to score from first making it a 3-to-0 game and that held for the final score!

Mainers win 7 in a row and continue to hold a one game lead in front of the Vermont Mountaineers (14-9) for first place in the northern division. The Mainers host the Mystic Schooners (15-7) inside Goodall Park with first pitch at 6:30 pm tomorrow (7/9).
