Vermont Mountaineers News Release

Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Keene Swamp Bats 3-2 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) play at Recreation Field on Tuesday night. With the win, Vermont improves to 14-9 on the summer and remains one game behind Sanford in the Northern Division standings.

Pitching was the story of the game once again, as Mountaineers starter Daniel Koger (Alabama-Huntsville) went six strong innings to earn the win and improve to 2-0 on the summer. Koger gave up two runs, both earned, on six hits and one walk. He struck out three.

Ty Wiest (Columbia) did the rest, throwing the final two and two-thirds innings. Wiest allowed just one hit and struck out three en route to earning his third save of the season.

David Sosebee (Georgia) started for Keene and threw the ball well despite taking the loss. Sosebee hurled six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. He struck out seven. With the loss, Sosebee falls to 0-3 on the summer.

It was a pitcher's duel through four innings, but Keene scored the first run of the game in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead.

Vermont answered back with three runs in the bottom of the frame to grab a 3-1 edge. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) led off with a single. Rob Knightes (St. John's) followed with a single to set up first and second with no outs. Two batters later, Alex Caruso (St. John's) crushed a two RBI triple to deep right center field, scoring Tiberi and Knightes. Caruso also scored on the play when Keene centerfielder Alex Liquori (Kennesaw State) overthrew third baseman Patrick McGrath (Washington State). The ball reached the fence on the far side of the Swamp Bats dugout, allowing Caruso to race home and give the Mountaineers a 3-1 advantage.

Keene scored once more in the top of the sixth, but the Mountaineers held onto the one-run lead the rest of the game.

Vermont had just four hits the entire game.

The Mountaineers return to action Wednesday night when they host the Laconia Muskrats at Recreation Field for the final time this season. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com. Minuteman Press and NECI sponsor free team photo night at the ballpark. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free 2014 Mountaineers team picture.
