Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Laconia, N.H. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) contest to the Laconia Muskrats, 5-4, at Robbie Mills Field on Monday night. With the loss and Sanford's five-inning, 1-0 win over Danbury, the Mainers have now taken sole possession of first place in the Northern Division by a full game.
The game was delayed two hours and thirty-three minutes with one out in the top of the seventh. The Mountaineers were threatening with runners on first and third. Nick Solak (Louisville), who pinch ran for Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) after he hit a double to right center, represented the tying run at third base. Ian Sagdal (Washington State) was the batter, and with an 0-1 count and the Mountaineers trailing 4-3, lightning off in the distance in center field put a halt in the action.
Upon resuming play at 11:11 p.m., Sagdal hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop Nick Masonia (Troy) that he couldn't handle. The ball bounced off Masonia's arm and into center field, allowing Solak to score the tying run.
Laconia scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the inning. Masonia hit a one out single off Vermont reliever Robert Strader (Louisville). Two batters later, with two outs, Colton Bottomley (Florida Gulf Coast) singled to set the stage for Christopher Beall (Arizona State). Beall hit an RBI single to score Masonia and give the Muskrats a 5-4 edge, one they would hold onto.
The Muskrats scored two runs in the first and two in the fourth and led 4-0 until the Mountaineers struck for three runs in the top of the fifth. Rob Knightes (St. John's) led off the inning with a single. Knightes moved to second on a wild pitch. Three batters later, with two outs, Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) punched an RBI single to score Knightes from second and cut the deficit to 4-1. After Vigliarolo singled, he and Parenty moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. Following the intentional walk of Blake Tiberi (Louisville) to load the bases, Laconia catcher Jacob Henson (St. Louis) attempted to throw behind Tiberi at first, to catch the runner off guard. The ball got by first baseman Ben Miller (Nebraska), allowing Parenty to score and Vigliarolo to advance to third. A wild pitch during Trey Amburgey's at bat enabled Vigliarolo to score, cutting the Laconia lead to a single run at 4-3.
Elliot Ashbeck (Bradley) started for Vermont, but didn't have his best stuff. It was a gutsy outing for Ashbeck, who dealt six innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits and one walk. The right-hander struck out one and did not receive a decision.
Jason Carmichael (Florida) got the start for Laconia and lasted five innings. He gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks. He struck out two. He too, received a no decision.
Strader took the loss for Vermont, falling to 1-1 on the summer. The left-hander dealt two innings of relief, allowing one earned run on three hits. He struck out three.
Marc Skinner (Troy) earned the win for the Muskrats, improving to 3-1 on the summer. Skinner pitched two and two-thirds innings of relief, giving up no runs on one hit and one walk. He struck out two Mountaineers.
Vermont returns to action on Tuesday night when the Mountaineers host the Keene Swamp Bats for a 6:30 meeting at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com. Cody Chevrolet will sponsor the game at the ballpark. Active military personnel and veterans will be given free admission to the contest.
