MONTPELIER, Vt. - Since getting back to .500 the Mainers have fallen in the last three games, including a sweep today by Vermont in the doubleheader. The Mountaineers walked off in the first game, 3-2, and dominated game two, 12-5.

Sanford jumped out to an early lead in game one on the solo home run from Quinn McDaniel (Maine) in the first inning, 1-0. It was his sixth homer of the year and hours after being named an All-Star Game starter.

An inning later, Vermont responded with an RBI single from Stephen DiTomaso (George Washington) that brought in Nic Notarangelo (Endicott), 1-1.

Then in the fifth, the Mainers would go ahead utilizing the long ball as Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt) went deep for the third time this season, 2-1.

However, just like before the Mountaineers responded with an RBI single from Adam Retzbach (Lehigh) that scored Evan Fox (Stony Brook), 2-2.

The game remained tied after seven innings, so it went to extra innings but that didn't stop Christopher Kalher (George Washington). The right-hander went seven and two-thirds innings and struck out 11.

Vermont would walk it off in the bottom of the eighth after the single from Santino Rosso (Hofstra) deflected off Brady Afthim (UConn) and Tyler Cox (Dartmouth) to score from second.

In game two, the Mountaineers struck first on an RBI single from Jack Cone (William & Mary), 1-0.

The Moose would respond in the fourth, as the first three batters connected on hits. Hewett led off with a double, with McDaniel driving him in on a single. Then Aidan Kane (Delaware) smoked one over the fence in right-center for his second round-tripper of the year, 3-1.

Despite falling behind, Vermont would not waver and bounced back with 11 unanswered runs, including a six-run fifth and four-run sixth, 12-3.

Hewett would score once again on an inside-the-park home run in the seventh. It was officially ruled a triple with an error, but both Hewett and Alex Knapp (George Mason) would score on the play, 12-5.

Following today, the green and yellow fall to 16-19 on the year, while Vermont continues to show why it's the top team in the NECBL, jumping to 28-6.

The Mainers will enjoy a much-needed day off on Monday before hitting the road for Martha's Vineyard for a date with the Sharks on Tuesday.

Vineyard took the first meeting between the two sides, 8-6, on July 9.
