CARDINES FIELD, NEWPORT, R.I. - Slate Alford (Mississippi State) homered to break a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the seventh and the Newport Gulls (23-11) came from behind to defeat the North Shore Navigators (8-26) in the only game of the night in the NECBL.

It was the fifth home run of the season for Alford, who went 2-4 with two runs scored.

The Gulls took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, which included a two-run double by Kolton Freeman (Dartmouth).

North Shore stormed back with three of their own in the top of the seventh on a double by Justin Cassella (Elon) and a two-run single by Charlie Taylor (Tennessee).

Colton Ledbetter (Samford) gave Newport the lead again in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double, but the Navigators grabbed a 6-4 lead with two in the third and one in the fifth. Jake Gustin (Bryant) had a big part in both of those innings, with a run-scoring double in the third and a solo home run two innings later.

Freeman led off the sixth with a double for Newport and he scored on a two-bagger by Luke Beckstein (Northeastern), who in turn came home on a double by pinch hitter Bryan Broecker (Michigan State) to tie the game at 6. That set the stage for Alford's one-out blast in the seventh.

Newport starter Chase Renner (Penn State) went two innings, allowing three earned runs on two hits and two walks. Jake Gigliotti (Northeastern) tossed five and a third innings, giving up six earned runs while striking out five.

Newport looks to tighten its lead on the Coastal Division with an important game against Mystic at 12:00 noon tomorrow at Dodd Memorial Stadium.

The Navigators head to Ocean State for a 6:30 PM game at Old Mountain Field.
