Kleinmann, Scalzo Selected as 2022 NECBL All-Star Game Broadcasters
July 18, 2022 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Martha's Vineyard's Eli Kleinmann and Sanford's Matt Scalzo have been named as the 2022 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) All-Star Game broadcasters, selected by their broadcasting peers and representatives from every team's front office.
The two first-year broadcasters will take their talents to The Shark Tank next Sunday where they will call all the events and festivities in the afternoon and evening, including the Home Run Derby and the 2022 All-Star Game.
"It's a great honor to announce these two selections who are All-Stars in their own right," said Craig Kaufman, Director of Communications for the NECBL. "These two broadcasters have put an incredible amount of time and effort into their craft this season, and they have been selected by both their peers and the leadership from across the league, and that is something they should be immensely proud of."
Scalzo is a rising junior at Penn State University and native of Ridgefield, Connecticut. At Penn State, Scalzo is studying broadcast journalism in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications and is minoring in Sports Studies. He works in the sports department for CommRadio, Penn State's student-run radio station, writing stories and calling games. This past school year he broadcasted Nittany Lion sporting events, including football, volleyball, basketball, hockey, and baseball. He was a basketball writer for CommRadio's Men's Basketball Insiders and spent time as the voice of Penn State Women's Volleyball during the fall of 2021. Scalzo is finishing up his first year as the voice of the Sanford Mainers.
"Matt has been a tremendous asset to our organization this summer and being recognized as one of the very best broadcasters in the league is a distinction he has, most certainly, earned," said Sanford Mainers General Manager Aaron Izaryk. "He works hard at his craft, has an attention to detail, and illustrates the game with his words incredibly well. We are proud of all our All Stars, Matt Scalzo included."
Kleinmann is a rising junior studying journalism at the University of Southern California and hails from Berkeley, California. Kleinmann studies journalism as a part of USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. At USC, Kleinmann broadcasts football, Men's and Women's basketball and baseball for KXSC, the student radio station. He is also a sports editor for Annenberg Media, the school's news outlet, as well as a sports anchor for the student-run television show. Kleinmann is in his first year working for the Martha's Vineyard Sharks.
"Eli is a great kid, who is extremely passionate about his job," said Martha's Vineyard Sharks Manager Jay Mendez. "I remember our first scrimmage; he asked if he could begin prepping for the game two hours before it started. Immediately I thought, this new intern is either ducking some of this clean up around the park, or he is really good at his job. Fast forward to today, this nomination confirms it was the latter."
The 2022 NECBL All-Star festivities on July 24 begin at 2:00 p.m. with the Home Run Derby. The All-Star Game is set to start at 4:30 p.m. For more information about the All-Star game, click here.
Tickets for the event are $5 for kids, $10 for general admission and $15 for the reserved grandstand. To buy tickets, click here. The 2022 All-Star Game and Home Run Derby will be streamed live on the NECBL Network.
