The NECBL Daily Rundown - 7/17/22 - Vineyard, Vermont Sweep Doubleheaders, Mystic Keeps Pace in Coastal

Fraser Field, Lynn, Mass. - The Martha's Vineyard Sharks (21-13) traveled to Fraser Field to sweep the North Shore Navigators (8-25) in a competitive doubleheader in the NECBL on Sunday night.

Game One: Martha's Vineyard Sharks 5 - North Shore Navigators 3

W - Dylan Jacobs 1-3 (FSU): 4.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

L - Luke Marshall 1-3 (Fairfield): 5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 5 K

S - Joseph Williams 0-0 (Pomona-Pitzer): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Three walks in four at-bats in the top of the second inning loaded the bases for Logan Chambers (Tennessee) who singled to right field to drive in a run and give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. With the bases still loaded, Danny Crossen (Northeastern) launched a sacrifice fly to center field to score another run, giving Martha's Vineyard a two-run lead.

In the top of the third, Crossen drove in his second RBI of the night off a single to right field to put the Sharks up 3-0. In the bottom of the inning, the Navigators battled back when Connor Bertsch (Dartmouth) drove in two runs on an RBI single to center field to cut the deficit to just one run.

The Sharks were able to fend off the Navigators throughout the rest of the game taking advantage of a lead-off triple by Michael Snyder (Washington) in the fifth who scored off a Jadyn Jackson (Georgia Tech) double two at-bats later. Snyder also put the nail in the coffin for North Shore, driving in a fifth and final run in the sixth inning with a single to left field. Ty Dooley (Coastal Carolina) wrapped up scoring for the Navs, hitting his first home run of the year, a solo shot in the fifth inning.

Game 2: Martha's Vineyard Sharks 3 - North Shore Navigators 2

W - Benjamin Wiegman 1-1 (Lousiville): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

L - Graham Jeffries 1-5 (Salve Regina): 6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

S - JD Mccracken 0-1 (Tennessee): 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

North Shore's Nathan Blasick (West Virginia) hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning to provide the first run of the game. In response, the Sharks started a rally. Michael Snyder (Washington) and Ben Nardi (Catholic) walked, and Aiden Tierney hit a single to load the bases. Matthew Maloney (Dayton) was hit by a pitch to tie the game up. Cavan Brady (Wheaton) hit a 2-run single to make it 3-1 in Vineyard's favor. The Navigators responded in the bottom of the second inning with a Brady O'Brien (Colby) sacrifice fly.

However, each pitching staff locked it down for the remainder of the game. North Shore's Graham Jeffries and Max LeBlanc (UMass Amherst) combined for five shutout innings. On Vineyard's side, Jacob Weaver (Austin Peay State), Benjamin Wiegman, and JD Mccracken combined for five shutout innings with one hit and eight strikeouts.

The Sharks will be on the road for a divisional matchup with the Mystic Schooners today at 6:30 p.m. The Navigators will also have a divisional road matchup today, with theirs being against the Newport Gulls at 6:35 p.m.

Vermont Mountaineers Sweep Sanford Mainers in Doubleheader

Montpelier Recreation Field - The Vermont Mountaineers (28-6) swept the Sanford Mainers (16-19) in a doubleheader, where they won the first game 3-2 and the second game 12-5.

Game One: Vermont Mountaineers 3 - Sanford Mainers 2

W - Luke Carpenter 2-0 (Dartmouth): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

L - Brady Afthim 5-1 (Connecticut): 3.1 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

With Tyler Cox (Dartmouth) on second base in extra innings, Santino Rosso (Hofstra) came up to the plate with one out. He scorched a ball back to the pitcher that went off his glove and ricocheted into left field. Cox came in to walk it off.

The game's scoring started almost immediately, as the second hitter of the game, Sanford's Quinn McDaniel (Maine Orono), hit a solo home run. Vermont tied it up in the bottom of the second inning with a Stephen DiTomaso (George Washington) RBI single. In the top of the fifth inning, Sanford's Calvin Hewett (Vanderbilt) hit a solo home run to put the Mainers ahead 2-1. The Mountaineers responded in the bottom of the inning with an Adam Retzbach (Lehigh) RBI single.

An individual who stood out was Vermont's starting pitcher Christopher Kahler (George Washington). He threw 7.2 innings with only three hits and one walk allowed with 11 strikeouts.

Game Two: Vermont Mountaineers 12 - Sanford Mainers 5

W - Matthew Scibilio 2-0 (Colby): 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

L - Zachary Rodgers 0-2 (UMass Lowell): 0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

The Mountaineers were down 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Tom Josten (Central Florida) walked to lead off the inning and Adam Retzbach hit a double. Mark Trotta (William & Mary) hit a 2-run double to give the Mountaineers the lead. Nic Notarangelo (Endicott) hit an RBI single to extend the lead. Jack Cone (William & Mary) hit an RBI single to make it 6-3, then Josten hit a 2-run double.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Vermont added insurance. Retzbach led off with a double, and that was followed by a Rosso RBI double. Trotta and Notarangelo had back-to-back walks, and Tyler Cox hit a 2-run single to make it 11-3. Cox was driven in on a fielder's choice.

Sanford's highlights included a Quinn McDaniel RBI single and an Aidan Kane 2-run home run.

The Mountaineers will have the day off today before playing the North Adams SteepleCats at home tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. The Mainers will also have the day off today before traveling to Martha's Vineyard to play the Sharks.

Upper Valley Nighthawks 4 - Ocean State Waves 2

W - Ryan Ignoffo 1-0 (Eastern Illinois) 1.1 IP 0 H 0 ER 1 BB 1 K

L - Joseph Sheets 2-3 (Columbia) 3 IP 6 H 3 ER 2 BB 3 K

Old Mountain Field in Kingston R.I. - The Upper Valley Nighthawks (16-19) used late inning heroics to take down the Ocean State Waves (17-18). After the first three innings of the game were scoreless, Ryan Ignoffo hit a leadoff home run, his tenth of the year, to make it 1-0 Nighthawks. Aside from that, the game was a pitcher's duel between Upper Valley's Matthew Adams (Southern Mississippi) and Ocean State's Matthew Rowe (Rutgers).

After both pitcher's departed, the Waves tied the game on a home run by Khyree Miller (Winthrop). It was a new ballgame, and Upper Valley retook the lead on an RBI single from Thomas Latham (Cisco JC). The game was soon tied once again as Alex Ramirez hit a solo home run to make it 2-2.

After the first three Nighthawk hitters reached base safely in the ninth, Ignoffo came through with a two-run single to make it 4-2. As if Ignoffo, with three RBI on the day, had not already done enough, he pitched a scoreless ninth to win the game for the Nighthawks.

The Nighthawks will return to Maxfield Sports Complex to face the North Adams SteeleCats Monday at 6:00 p.m. The Waves will take an off day on Monday, but will take on the North Shore Navigators at Old Mountain Field on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Danbury Westerners 11 - North Adams SteepleCats 5

W - Jack Bowery 3-0 (Marist): 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

L - Will Hearn 1-2 (San Francisco): 3.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Joe Wolfe Field in North Adams, Mass. - The Danbury Westerners (15-19) took down the North Adams SteepleCats (8-26) after a late-inning surge.

The Westerners entered the top of the eighth down a run, but scored seven runs in the next two innings to take the lead and secure the win. A two-run RBI single via Michael Becchetti (Fairfield) gave Danbury a 6-5 lead in the eighth. The Westerners tacked on five runs in the ninth to expand their advantage. The inning included RBIs from Sam Mongelli (Sacred Heart), Korey Morton (Connecticut) and Billy Gerlott (Penn St).

North Adams scored five of the first six runs of the game. The SteepleCats put up four runs in the bottom of the first. An Alex Lane (Bryant) single and Ryan Magdic (Florida Southern) double played a part in the fast start. Danbury got one back in the second off a Michael Becchetti sacrifice fly. Another Alex Lane single in the bottom of the second restored North Adams' lead to four.

Danbury chipped away at the SteepleCats lead in the third, scoring three runs with the help of Sam Mongelli and Alex Stone (Duke) to make it 5-4 SteepleCats. The score stayed the same until the Westerners scored seven total runs in the eighth and ninth. Danbury scored the last ten runs of the contest and held North Adams scoreless after the second inning.

The Westerners have an off day today before hosting Bristol (25-9) tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. The SteepleCats are back in action today at 6:00 p.m. when they travel to face Upper Valley (16-19).

Mystic Schooners 4 - Valley Blue Sox 1

W - Hector Alejandro 1-0 (UConn) 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

L - Jared Kuryan 1-1 (Western New England) 5 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

S - Ken Turner (Bryant) 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

McKenzie Stadium in Holyoke, M.A. - The Mystic Schooners (20-14) defeated the Valley Blue Sox (15-20) on the back of great pitching.

The Schooners wasted no time getting on the board as Eddie Micheletti (George Washington) hit a two-run home run to start the game on the right foot for Mystic. Valley responded with a run scored in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout from Antonio Guerrero (Washington).

Mystic's pitching trio of Hector Alejandro, Bowen Baker (Fairfield), and Ken Turner shut down the Valley offense for one run on seven hits, two walks, and eight strikeouts. There was no other offense until the ninth inning. After each of the first three Schooner batters reached base safely, Charlie Pagliarini drove in two on a single to make it 4-1. That would be the score the Schooners won by.

The Schooners have now won 13 of its last 18, and they will return to Dodd Stadium on Monday to face the Martha's Vineyard Sharks at 6:30 p.m. The Blue Sox have now lost six of its last seven, and the team will look to build back momentum on Monday when they take on the Bristol Blues at Muzzy Field at 6:30 p.m.
