Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs have placed relief pitchers Scott Maine and Justin Berg on the disabled list today. Maine is being placed on the DL after suffering a sprained left ankle, and Berg will be sidelined for the second time this season with a sore right elbow. In corresponding moves, Kyle Smit and Daniel Berlind have been called up to join Iowa.

Maine is 3-4 with a 3.75 ERA in 50.1 innings pitched (37 games) this season with Iowa. The lefty has a team-high 11 saves. He has been promoted twice this season to the Chicago Cubs. In seven appearances with Chicago, Maine has no record and a 10.29 ERA.

Berg, who spent nearly a month on the DL in June, is 4-1 with a 5.16 ERA in 29.2 innings pitched (29 games). He too has spent time with the Chicago Cubs this year, and has no record with a 3.78 ERA in 12 innings (8 games) with the big-league club.

Smit joins Iowa from Hi-A Daytona. In nine games (13.1 innings pitched) with the Daytona Cubs, Smit is 2-2 with a 4.85 ERA. He began the 2011 season with the Double-A Smokies where he was 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA in 30 games (43.1 innings pitched). Smit was originally a fifth round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006. He was acquired by the Cubs, along with Blake DeWitt and Brett Wallach, from the Dodgers in the trade that sent Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot to Los Angeles. This will be his first stint at the triple-A level.

Berlind joins the I-Cubs from Lo-A Peoria. He joined the Peoria Chiefs on June 30 after signing a minor league deal with the Cubs out of the Independent CamAm League. In 16 appearances with the Chiefs, Belind is 1-3 with a 4.56 ERA. He has a team-leading four saves over 25.2 innings pitched. Berlind was originally selected in the 44th round by the Cubs out of high school in the 2007 amateur draft but did not sign. He was then selected in the seventh round in the 2007 draft and signed with the Minnesota Twins out of Los Angeles Pierce Junior College. A Gulf Coast League All-Star in 2007, Berlind is also advancing to the triple-A level for the first time in his career.
