Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Des Moines, Iowa - Austin Bibens-Dirkx and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout and led the Iowa Cubs (60-70) to a 4-0 win over the Oklahoma City RedHawks (60-70) before 6,675 Monday night at Principal Park.
Bibens-Dirkx (4-5) allowed four hits over seven shutout frames, with one walk and four strikeouts in a winning decision for the Cubs. RedHawks starter Lucas Harrell (4-2) suffered a tough-luck loss, giving up only a first inning run and four hits over seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Harrell induced 11 groundouts against only 3 fly outs.
Anderson Hernandez extended a hitting streak to 20 games with a first inning single to centerfield and finished 2-for-4. Hernandez is batting .414 (36x87) in the 20-game streak, the longest for Oklahoma City in 2011. The Pacific Coast League high for 2011 is 24 from Reno's Tony Abreu June 4-July 6. The Pacific Coast League record for longest hitting streak is 61 from San Francisco's Joe DiMaggio May 28-July 25, 1933.
Iowa opened the scoring in the first inning against Harrell. Brett Jackson led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Scott Moore single for a 1-0 game.
The best scoring chance for Oklahoma City came in the third inning against Bibens-Dirkx. J.R. Towles led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. With two out, Anderson Hernandez singled into right field, but Towles was thrown out at home by Matt Spencer for the final out of the inning. Towles was ejected by home plate umpire Steve Barga during the ensuing argument.
Iowa added three insurance runs in the eighth inning. Lou Montanez tripled to leadoff the inning and scored on a Jackson single for a 2-0 Cubs lead. Marwin Gonzalez later reached on a fielder's choice, and Jackson and Gonzalez later stole third and second with two out. Wellington Castillo next hit a groundball deep at shortstop, but Hernandez's throw went wild for an error and scored two runs for a 4-0 Iowa lead.
RedHawks LH Andy Van Hekken (7-5, 3.08) carries the PCL's second-best ERA into Tuesday's 12:05 p.m. start against Cubs RH Alberto Cabrera. Live radio coverage is available on AM 1340 The Game, 1340thegame.com and through the IHeartRadio application.
