Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Madison, WI- The Madison Mallards used a six-run third inning on Tuesday evening at Warner Park to down the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters, 14-6 in a rain-shortened contest.
The ballgame went into a 30-minute rain delay at 10:03 p.m. and was officially called at 10:30 p.m. Once the game was called, the score reverted back to the final full-inning played, with the game ending after seven complete innings.
The Mallards scored six runs on six hits while sending 12 batters to the plate against Rafters starter, Nick Pettus. Pettus had been used out of the back-end of the bullpen through the Rafters for six games and made his first start in nearly three seasons. Pettus battled the elements for three innings as rain fell off-and-on throughout the entire ballgame.
The Mallards scored first in the second inning when Madison right fielder, Tate Matheny opened the inning off with a leadoff single. Mike Fitzgerald then followed with an RBI double that tight-roped the right field line, plating the Mallards first run and making the score, 1-0. The Inning wasn't over, as with two outs, leadoff man, Anthony Cheky, roped an RBI single to right field that scored the final run of the second inning, making the lead, 2-0.
The real dagger came in the third inning when Madison's offense, ranked ninth in the Northwoods league through the first six games, ignited for a big six-run third inning. The Mallards left fielder, Drew Weeks, led off the frame with a solo homerun to centerfield. The homerun was the second of the year allowed for Pettus and gave the Mallards an early advantage, 3-0. Madison wouldn't look back as their offense would continue to press the Rafters pitching staff throughout the game.
The Rafters combined to piece together tonight's game by using four different arms as they allowed 13 runs on 14 hits, while yielding way to eight walks.
Wisconsin Rapids offensive attack was led by Montevallo catcher and Rafters right fielded, Jackson Slaid, was 3-4 why clubbing his way to a four RBI night. The RBI total is the highest by a Rafter player this year. Slaid added a three-run homerun in the top of the sixth inning to conclude his night at the plate.
The Rafters and Mallards will meet again tomorrow as the series shifts towards Witter Field and Wisconsin Rapids for a 7:05 p.m. game time. The game between the two clubs will be the the first of a five-game homestand.
Fans can listen to tomorrows broadcast on WFHR 1320 AM as first-year Rafters broadcaster, Aaron Berlin, will have the call.
