Honkers Fall in Mankato

(Rochester,MN) - The Rochester Honkers suffered a third consecutive loss as they fell to the Mankato MoonDogs 7-2 Wednesday at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato, MN.

Zach Zehner reached on an error committed by Honkers second baseman Jarad Watts (Bethel University) and came around to score on Chase Simpson's Northwoods League-leading fourth homerun of the season to give Mankato an early 2-0 lead. Jonathon Rodriguez reached on an error by Toby Thomas (Pensacola State) in the following at bat and came around to score later in the inning to increase the MoonDogs first inning lead to three runs.

College teammates Alex Greer and Quinn Carpenter (Iowa Western) teamed up to put the Rochester on the board in the fourth inning. Greer singled with out and advanced from first to third on a ground out before scoring on Carpenter's two-out single.

Honkers starting pitcher Jordan Milbrath (Augustana College) appeared to settle down after a shaky first inning. He retired 12 consecutive batters before walking Ryan Tuntland with two outs in the fifth inning. Krysthian Leal, Kendall Patrick, and Tim Lynch each followed with hits to give Mankato a 6-1 lead after five innings. Milbrath (0-2) took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, in five innings. Cameron Giannini (1-0) picked up the win for Mankato. He allowed one run on six hits in six innings.

The Honkers scored a second run in the ninth inning when Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) singled with two outs to score Watts, who had walked earlier in the inning. Pitchers Stephen Paladino (Felician College) and Derrick Hadley (Sam Houston) each made their season debut in relief for the Honkers.

Greer led the offense for Rochester, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Designated hitter Mitch Anderson (Rochester Community and Technical College added a pair of singles and a stolen base.

Rochester (4-4) will try to snap its three game losing streak when it hosts Mankato in the second game of a two-game series at 7:05 p.m. Thursday at Mayo Field. Mason Pingel (Western Illinois) is slated to make his second start of the season after earning a victory last Saturday vs. Alexandria.
