Springfield Armor News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA - The Springfield Armor allowed a 16-point halftime lead to evaporate late as the Fort Wayne Mad Ants charged back for a 98-94 overtime victory in front of 3,546 fans at the MassMutual Center tonight.
The Armor, playing without starting point guard Scottie Reynolds (illness), roared out of the gate to a 23-15 lead after one quarter. The second quarter was equally as impressive for the Armor, as the Armor built a 48-32 lead by halftime, equaling their largest halftime lead of the season.
In the second half, Fort Wayne settled down and began to slowly chip away at the Armor's lead. A 35-16 third quarter allowed the Mad Ants to erase their 16-point deficit and take command of the lead. Armor head coach Dee Brown was assessed two technical fouls and ejected during a dispute with the officiating crew in the third. It was Brown's second ejection of the season.
The Armor managed to draw even with the Mad Ants in the waning stages of the fourth quarter, but JamesOn Curry's last-second jumper was off the mark and the two teams were tied 92-92 at the end of regulation.
In the overtime period, the Mad Ants outscored the Armor 6-2 to take the 98-94 victory.
The Mad Ants were led by Rod Wilmont's 29 points. Marvin Phillips chipped in with 17 and Chris Kramer added 16 to propel Fort Wayne to victory. Both Wilmont and Corey Allmond were assessed technical fouls in the game.
The Armor were led by Curry, who scored a team-high 21 points and pulled down a season-high 12 rebounds. Tre Whitted helped out with 14 points, Jerry Smith, drawing the start at the point in place of Reynolds, scored 13, and Eugene Spates and Lance Hurdle both scored 11 points off the Armor bench.
The game featured a total of 12 lead changes and 14 ties.
The Armor and the Mad Ants will head to Fort Wayne for games on Thursday and Saturday of next week. The Armor's final home game of the 2010-11 regular season will be on Sat. March 26th at 8:00 p.m. against the New Mexico Thunderbirds. The game will be the team's âFan Appreciation Night', as well as the Armor's âAffiliate Night.
