Maciel Extends Hitting Streak, But Miracle Drop Opener
July 8, 2019 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Gabriel Maciel extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a fifth inning home run, but it accounted for the only run of the night for the Miracle in a 6-1 loss to the Daytona Tortugas on Monday at Hammond Stadium.
Daytona's Jose Garcia opened the scoring in the third with a two-out, two-run single. The Tortugas added a run in the top of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.
Maciel's home run, his second of the season, brought the Miracle to within two, but it was the closest they would come in the series opener.
Daytona broke the game open in the seventh with three runs against reliever Rickey Ramirez. The right-hander walked three (one intentionally), and also hit a batter.
Miracle starter Cole Sands suffered the loss after allowing three runs in six innings of work. Sands (2-2) walked one and struck out five.
Fort Myers left six men on base and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. After a season-high six-game winning streak, the Miracle have dropped back-to-back games.
The four-game series continues on Tuesday night in Fort Myers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
