JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Mississippi Braves left fielder Travis Demeritte hit two home runs with four RBIs, and third baseman Luis Valenzuela had five RBIs in a 16-8 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in front of 3,248 at St. Vincent's HealthCare Military Appreciation Night and Budweiser Thirsty Thursday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Mississippi (24-22 second half, 53-63 overall) took the lead before the game's first out. Center fielder Cristian Pache and second baseman Alejandro Salazar hit consecutive singles against Jacksonville right-hander Nick Neidert, and right fielder Tyler Neslony hit a three-run home run to left field. The Jumbo Shrimp (18-28, 46-68) answered in the bottom of the inning against Mississippi right-hander Enderson Franco, as center fielder Monte Harrison hit his team-high 16th home run to center field, and second baseman Justin Twine hit an RBI single.
The Braves extended the lead with four straight batters reaching with two outs in the top of the third inning. Demeritte and first baseman Tyler Marlette singled, catcher Carlos Martinez walked, and third baseman Luis Valenzuela hit a two-run double. Jacksonville answered with Twine's two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 5-4.
Demeritte extended the lead to 6-4 with his solo home run in the fifth inning against right-hander Kolton Mahoney. The Jumbo Shrimp took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, when right fielder Braxton Lee had an RBI groundout, and third baseman Brian Schales hit a two-run single. The 7-6 lead lasted only until the top of the seventh inning, when Demeritte hit a three-run home run off right-hander Lukas Schiraldi (0-1) for a 9-7 Braves lead. Jacksonville first baseman Eric Jagielo trimmed the deficit to 9-8 against right-hander Josh Graham (4-2) with his 10th home run and team-high 60th RBI in the bottom of the inning. The Braves responded with a six-run eighth inning against left-hander Scott Squier, as Neslony and Marlette hit RBI doubles and Valenzuela's three-run triple. Martinez's ninth-inning RBI single made it 16-8.
UP NEXT: The Jumbo Shrimp continue their series with Missisippi at 7:05 p.m. Friday, when Jacksonville right-hander Robert Dugger (4-5) is scheduled to start. Fans may visit any participating NAPA AutoCare Center to get a FREE general admission ticket (reserved seat upgrade available at the box office) for the game that concludes with NAPA AutoCare Family Fireworks. The Jumbo Shrimp wear red "Bold City" jerseys to support the military on Red Shirt Friday, when fans who wear red can save $1 per ticket at the box office or donate the $1 to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Friday Night Lites Miller Lite Happy Hour offers $1 12-oz. Miller Lite and $1 off craft beer specials in the Craft Cave by the third-base gates until 7:30 p.m. Florida Blue Night will include tables on the concourse and an activation truck in the Wolfson Children's Hospital Kids Zone.
