M-Braves Drop Series Opener 5-2 to Birmingham

PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (31-32) missed out on some late opportunites in a 5-2 loss to the Birmingham Barons (22-42) on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park.

The M-Braves left eight runners on, six of which were in scoring position. The M-Braves went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Alan Rangel took the loss, allowing five runs in five innings. The right-hander walked four and struck out four. Bryan Ramos' three-run homer off Rangel made it 5-0 after five innings.

Cade Bunnell scored on a balk in the fifth to make it 5-1. Campbell knocked in a run in on a liner to right center field to make it 5-2 in the sixth. Campbell went 3-for-4 with three singles and an RBI.

The M-Braves bullpen kept them in the game. Nick Howard came out of the bullpen first and pitched a pair of shutout innings. Domingo Gonzalez increased his scoreless innings streak to 13 2/3 innings with a scoreless eighth. Alec Barger tossed a scoreless ninth and improved to a 2.25 ERA in 28 innings this season.

The M-Braves put runners on, but they left six runners on from the sixth to eighth innings and failed to get anything going in the ninth.

Beau Philip put together his second multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two singles and a walk. Tyler Tolve's base hit in the sixth increased his on-base streak to 16 games.

The second game of the series is on Wednesday at Trustmark Park. RHP Scott Blewett (2-3, 4.44) will pitch for Mississippi while RHP Tommy Sommer (2-0, 4.30) will start for Birmingham. The first pitch is at 12:05 pm CT, with coverage starting 15 minutes before on 102.1 The Box, First Pitch App, and Bally Live.
