Mississippi Braves News Release
Montgomery, AL - The Montgomery Biscuits jumped for a seven-run first inning on Monday night and kept the Mississippi Braves at bay for a 9-0 win at Riverwalk Stadium.
The Biscuits (10-9; 45-44) sent ten men to the plate in the first to jump out to a 7-0 lead. Ryan Brett doubled against starter Ryan Weber (3-3), and Jake Hager singled to drive him home for the first run. After Taylor Motter's sacrifice moved Hager to second, Cameron Seitzer singled him in to make it 2-0.
With Richie Shaffer at the plate, Seitzer took off from first and Shaffer swung and missed at strike three. Catcher Braeden Schlehuber threw a one-hopper that beat the runner by plenty but was dropped by Gustavo Nunez, and Seitzer was safe on an error by the second baseman.
That would have been the final out of the inning, but Luke Maile ripped an RBI double for a 3-0 lead. Then Alejandro Segovia hit a two-run home run, his second in as many at-bats joining an eighth inning shot on Sunday, to grow the lead to 5-0. Weber walked Kes Carter and Willie Argo blasted a two-run shot, his fourth, to make it 7-0.
Weber's day ended after just the one inning, allowing seven runs- two earned- on six hits, striking out one and walking one.
Cody Fassold came on in relief for the M-Braves (11-8; 50-38), allowing a solo home run to Maile to lead off the third inning, his second relief frame, to make it 8-0. Two batters later, Carter singled and Brett clubbed a two-out triple to extend the lead to 9-0.
The Braves' bullpen was brilliant the rest of the day, shutting the Biscuits down over the final five innings, with Ryan Kelly hurling 2 1/3 scoreless frames with four strikeouts and Jorge Reyes closing down the final two.
Offensively, the M-Braves managed just three hits, one each for Mycal Jones, Kyle Wren and David Rohm.
The Biscuits had two different hitters fall a knock shy of the cycle, with Maile missing the triple and Brett missing the home run.
The loss sent the Braves to their first series loss of the second half, but they will try to salvage the final game of the series on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM CT. Right-hander Mitch Atkins (3-0, 3.97) takes the mound against right-hander Mike Colla (4-9, 5.36) for the Biscuits.
Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 6:30 PM CT on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
