Lynx Rookie Nicole Ohlde Named Big 12 Female Athlete of the Year

Minneapolis/St. Paul - Former Kansas State women's basketball player and current Minnesota Lynx rookie forward Nicole Ohlde was named the 2004 Big 12 Conference Female Athlete of the Year as announced by the Big 12 league office announced Wednesday.
Ohlde, selected by the Lynx sixth overall in the 2004 WNBA draft, was joined by Oklahoma quarterback Jason White, who was selected as this year's Big 12 Conference Male Athlete of the Year. Both were chosen by a panel of athletic administrators from each conference institution and media from each school's region. One female and one male student-athlete per school were nominated by the directors of athletics from each institution. The selections were based upon the 2003-04 athletic performance and academic achievement, with citizenship as a tiebreaker.
A consensus First Team All-American (WBCA/Kodak, AP, USBWA) last season, Ohlde ended her storied career as the Big 12's and Kansas State's all-time leading scorer with 2,241 points and the school's career rebound leader with 995 boards. The 2003 and 2004 Big 12 Conference Player of the Year and three-time First Team All-Big 12 selection guided the Wildcats to their first Big 12 women's basketball conference title in 2003-04. In her rookie season with the Lynx, Ohlde is averaging 10.9 points (second among WNBA rookies), 6.1 rebounds (first among rookies), and 1.9 assists.
Off the court, Ohlde was a seven-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll student and was named CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-America in 2004. The social science major was an Academic All-Big 12 selection this past season and was named the 2004 Co-Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year at K-State. In the community, she participated in the Manhattan Library Reading Program, the KSU Cat Caravans and Red Cross blood drives. She also volunteered for the Lincoln Elementary School reading program and at the Clay Center Senior Center.
