Lynx Ground Ice Pilots 5-1
February 26, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
The Augusta Lynx not only shut down the ECHL's third-best power play, but scored twice with the man advantage in a 5-1 win over the Pensacola Ice Pilots on Thursday night at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.
Four first-period goals put the Lynx out in front of the Ice Pilots after 20 minutes, starting with Louis Goulet's first goal of the night just 1:22 into the game from Jonathan Gagnon and Nick Greenough. Scott Kelman followed from Terry Marchant and Todd Bennett before Goulet marked again at 14:59, an unassisted marker that beat starter Brian Eklund on the glove side to make it 3-0 Lynx. Capping off the first period scoring at 18:20, Marchant scored on the power play from Kelman and Martin Lapointe to make it a four goal advantage. Augusta out-shot the Ice Pilots 16-7 in the first period, and chased Eklund in favor of Evgeny Konstantinov to start the second period.
Only one goal was scored in the middle frame, off the stick of Aaron Gionet at 1:37 from Peter Fregoe. With a 4-1 lead to start the third period, Augusta looked to close the door.
Jason Saal was called on most often in the third period of last night's game, turning aside 16 shots in the final frame and 37 overall in the contest to earn the win. Todd Bennett would add a late power play goal into an empty net at 18:31 from Kelman and Marchant to ice the victory for the Lynx, a 5-1 win that moves their record on the season to 23-25-6 with 18 games remaining on the ECHL schedule. Eklund was saddled with the loss while Konstantinov stopped 18 shots for the Ice Pilots without allowing a goal.
Augusta will now travel to Greensboro to take on the Generals tomorrow night at 7:30 pm, with the pre-game show on EAGLE 102 starting at 7 pm. The Lynx then play another four straight on the road before returning home March 13th against the Florence Pride for a 7:35 pm contest. Tickets for all remaining Lynx home games are on sale through the Civic Center Box Office, all TicketMaster locations, on line at www.TicketMaster.com, or charge by phone at (706) 828-7700.
