Lynx Drop First Pre-Season Game 3-2

October 11, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

The Augusta Lynx got a pair of two point performances out of Martin Lapointe and Scott Kelman, but it wasn't enough to overcome a pair of goals by Cam Brown and a late penalty shot goal in a 3-2 loss Friday night.

Playing their first pre-season game of the year, Augusta jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a power play goal by Matt Dzieduszycki at 17:04 of the first period. Dzieduszycki picked up a loose puck off the dasher boards after Lapointe fired a shot just wide of the Gwinnett Gladiators' net. Scott Kelman also picked up an assist on the goal, the only marker of the first period.

In the second stanza, the Lynx extended their lead to 2-0 on a great individual effort by Kelman. Picking the puck up behind the Gladiators' net, he managed to cut through three Gwinnett players en route to the slot, picking the corner on goaltender Adam Munro's glove side. Lapointe and Scott Corbett picked up assists on the goal at 3:43. Cam Brown would bring his team back to within one, however, when he chipped a rebound over a sprawling Andy Kollar at 17:25 to make it 2-1. Brown would strike again in the third period at 16:44 to even the game up at two, setting the stage for a wild finish.

With Lynx goaltender BJ Strongman down on the ice and the puck loose in the crease, defenseman Benoit Cotnoir was whistled for moving the net off its moorings to force a stoppage in play, resulting in a penalty shot with just 43.3 seconds remaining in regulation. Brandon Dietrich was selected to shoot, and he then beat Strongman with a forehand-backhand move, flipping the puck over the sprawling goaltender for the 3-2 lead. Despite an extra attacker in the waning seconds, the Lynx could not tie the game. Final shots on goal were in favor of the Gladiators, 55-20. Andy Kollar stopped 32 of 33 shots faced in net for the Lynx, while Strongman turned aside 20 shots. Munro went the distance in net for Gwinnett, stopping 18 shots for the win.

Augusta and Gwinnett will meet again Saturday night at 7:35 pm at the Augusta Richmond County Civic Center. Tickets are $5 each, and may be purchased directly at the box office. Season ticket holders are admitted free to the game with their season ticket books.
