Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Marty Johnston scored with 12.6 seconds left in regulation as Trenton edged Alaska 2-1 before a fired-up crowd of 3,780 Friday night at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces much-improved defense limited Trenton to just 28 shots, including only four in the third period before Johnston's game-winner, which was set up by a brilliant feed from longtime Titan star Scott Bertoli. Alaska goaltender Dan Murphy played the first two periods and turned away 22 of 23 shots before giving way to Lance Mayes for the final 20 minutes. Mayes made a spectacular pad save against Titans forward Aaron Phillips early in the third period to preserve the 1-1 tie until the closing seconds.

Bertoli, Trenton's leading returning scorer, scored his second goal of the preseason at 9:21 of the first period with the Titans on a power play, the only time the visitors connected with the man advantage in eight tries. The Aces tied the game when Shane Palahicky, a rookie forward out of Cornell University, rammed home a Wes Dorey rebound almost four minutes into the second period. The Aces managed 24 shots against Trenton goaltender Andrew Allen but came up empty in five power play attempts.

Alaska and Trenton (now 1-0-1 in the preseason after a shootout loss to Atlantic City Tuesday) will meet again in the preseason finale tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. The Aces open the regular season against the Fresno Falcons October 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the first of a three-game set at Sullivan Arena.
