Lynx Blanked By Stingrays

March 31, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

The Augusta Lynx just ran out of gas on Tuesday night, playing with a short bench against the Stingrays in South Carolina. Kirk Daubenspeck made 30 saves for his third shutout of the season as the Lynx lost 3-0 at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Opening action saw both teams with chances to score, especially on the power play. Each club had a pair of power play chances, with Augusta owning a 5-on-3 situation for 24 seconds in the first period. But the penalty killers for South Carolina and Augusta did their jobs, holding the power plays off the board through one period of play for a scoreless tie.

South Carolina would finally find the net on the power play in the second, scoring at 13:06 when Ed Courtenay picked up a rebound at the side of the Augusta net for a 1-0 Stingrays lead. Aaron Power's point shot deflected in front off Curtis Huppe and over to Courtenay for his 28th goal of the season. The Lynx, meanwhile, garnered a late advantage in the period and carried over 1:20 of power play time to the third period, hoping to gain an edge early in the final frame.

Instead of the Lynx gaining momentum, South Carolina killed off the power play, and then used the power play to their advantage when Courtenay scored his second man advantage goal of the game, putting home the rebound from a Mike Barrie shot to make it 2-0 Stingrays. Aaron Power also notched his second assist of the game on the goal at 5:19. Insurance was provided by Boris Protsenko at 17:19 as he converted a steal by Dustin Johner for a 3-0 final in favor of the Stingrays. Kirk Daubenspeck stopped 30 Lynx shots for the win, while Jason Saal finished with 34 saves in the loss.

Augusta now moves back home for their final home game of the year, coming this Thursday night against the Columbus Cottonmouths at 7:05 pm. It's Fan Appreciation Night and Comcast Lynx Team Photo Night, with 3,000 2003-04 Lynx team photos handed out to fans coming in the doors. After that, the team heads straight to Florida to take on the Everblades in a pair of games Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 pm to finish out the year. All games will be broadcast live on EAGLE 102.
