IceGators Acquire Local Prospect

March 31, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Louisiana IceGators News Release

Lafayette, LA – The Louisiana IceGators announced today they have signed Kyle Naomi, the first Lafayette native to join the IceGators roster. The goaltender prospect has been added as a back-up to Derek Gustafson. Naomi joins the IceGators after playing junior hockey last year for the Capital Thunder in Sacramento, California, before a leg injury shortened his season.

Naomi, born September 26, 1983 at Women's and Children's Hospital in Lafayette, became a hockey fan when the IceGators moved to town in 1995. He signed up for roller hockey on December 4, 1995, the day after the infamous "Tallahassee Brawl" at the Cajundome. The netminder joined the Louisiana Amateur Hockey Association (LAHA) at the age of 15 and played for the Junior IceGators from 1998 – 2000.

"It is an exciting day for hockey in the state of Louisiana when a local product makes it to this level," said IceGators Head Coach Dave Farrish. "The IceGator organization congratulates Kyle on his hard work and hopes he is the first of many native born players to wear the Green and Gold of the IceGators."

The IceGators will welcome the Pensacola Ice Pilots on April 1 at 7:05 p.m. The IceGators are fighting to clinch the Central Division title and have two games left in the regular season. With the Mississippi Sea Wolves win over the Columbus Cottonmouths today, the first two playoff dates for IceGators will be Wednesday, April 7 and Thursday, April 8 at the Cajundome. Currently, the IceGators are set to face either the Pensacola Ice Pilots or the Gwinnett Gladiators in the first round of the 2004 Kelly Cup Playoffs.
