
Checkers close out 2003-04 regular season this weekend

(Charlotte, NC - Wednesday, March 31) The Checkers (31-31-8 for 70 points) will close out the 2003-04 regular season this weekend with two road games. Friday night the Checkers will play in Roanoke, and then Saturday night travel to Columbia to conclude the season. Charlotte was eliminated from the ECHL playoffs last Friday in a 3-2 loss to Florence. There are still four teams battling for the final three playoff spots in the Southern Division. The Checkers can play spoilers this Friday when they play Roanoke, as the Express need to win its last two games in its attempt to secure a playoff spot. Charlotte is currently winless in its last seven games at 0-6-1, and is 1-10-1 in its last 12 contests.

Friday, April 2: Charlotte @ Roanoke - 7:30 p.m.
Charlotte will close out its six-game season series with the Express, looking for a win to even the series. The Checkers have dropped two, close, one-goal decisions in the two previous meetings at the Roundhouse. As of Wednesday, Roanoke is one of four teams with 80 points (36-26-8) and in the hunt for the final three playoff spots in the Southern Division. The Express is coached by Tony MacAulay.

Saturday, April 3: Charlotte @ Columbia - 7:30 p.m.
The Checkers end the regular season Saturday night in Columbia. The Inferno has wrapped up first place in the Southern Division with a record of 42-20-8 for 92 points. Scott White is the Head Coach of Columbia, and the Inferno are affiliated with the National Hockey League's Vancouver Canucks and the American Hockey League's Manitoba Moose.

· Checkers went 0-4-0 last week.
· The Checkers are 1-10-1 in their last 12 games.

· The Checkers power play ranks 22nd in the ECHL at 15.3%, while the penalty kill moved up to 3rd in the league at 87.5%.
· Center Konrad McKay has scored at least a point in seven of his last nine games with 3g, 5a, = 8pts in that span. McKay also led the Checkers in scoring in March with three goals and ten assists for 13 points in 13 games.
· Charlotte finished the season drawing 162,618 fans for an average of 4,517, 11th in the ECHL.
· The Checkers are tied with Pensacola in short-handed goals with 14.
· Charlotte was officially eliminated from the playoffs after Friday's 3-2 loss to the Florence Pride on Friday night. It is the second straight season the Checkers have missed post-season play, and four of the last six.
