THE HILLCATS: Lynchburg answered a 3-0 loss to Potomac on Thursday night with a 3-0 blanking of the P-Nats last night in game two of a four-game series at City Stadium...Tonight is game three of a four-game series with Potomac and the third contest in a seven-game homestand for the Cats...
VS. POTOMAC: The Hillcats are 4-4 against the Nationals thus far this season with both teams taking a series on their home field...Lynchburg is 158-149 against Potomac all-time and are 86-73 in the Hill City...Last season the Cats won the season series with the P-Nats 11-9 and were 6-4 at Calvin Falwell Field...
ROAD TO RECOVERY: RHP Edinson Volquez is making his 2010 debut tonight with the Hillcats in a rehabilitation start...In 2008 he was the Reds' lone representative in the National League All-Star game...He was 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA with 206 strikeouts in 196 innings...The righty last threw June 1, 2009 for the Reds against St. Louis...He missed the rest of last season and had reconstructive elbow surgery August 3...Volquez was 4-2, with a 4.35 ERA in nine starts with Cincinnati last year...On April 20, Volquez was suspended for 50 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program...His suspension ends Sunday, and he will be pitching under a rehab assignment while under suspension..
FIRING BLANKS: Last night Lynchburg shutout Potomac with a 3-0 victory a night after the Nationals shutout the Hillcats 3-0 on Thursday night...It was the Cats third shutout of the season and on Thursday they were shutout for the second time this season...This marks the first time this season Lynchburg has had back-to-back games were one of the two teams was held scoreless...
ALL FOR ONE: All nine batters in the Hillcats line-up had a hit last night for the first time this season...The 13 hits Lynchburg collected was still four shy of thei season-high of 17 hits at Salem on April 19th...
TOMMY, HAVE YOU MET JOHN? Tonight's starting pitcher RHP Edinson Volquez has missed all of this season and the majority of last year after having Tommy John Surgery on his throwing elbow...Volquez is one of seven different players the Hillcats have had this season who have undergone the famed Tommy John Surgery...RHP Scott Gaffney (currently on the Disabled List), LHP Travis Webb (currently in Double-A Carolina), RHP Jeff Jeffords, RHP James Avery and LHP Bill Bray are all Hillcats hurlers who had surgery to repair their torn ulnar collateral ligament...C Devin Mesoraco (currently in Double-A Carolina) also had the surgery back in high school in Pennsylvania...
HOME COOKIN': RHP James Avery tossed six shutout innings last night in the Hillcats win...It was his longest start of the season and his second win of the campaign in five starts since returning from Tommy John surgery...Both of his wins have come at home where in two starts he is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA (11 and 1/3 innings)...
BABY STEPS: LHP Bill Bray entered the game last night with a man on base and escaped the inning without allowing a run...It was the first time this season Bray has pitched in back-to-back games and it was the first time he has inherited a runner...In four games now with the Hillcats the former big leaguer has not allowed a run in four and 2/3 innings...
ALL-STAR: RHP Brad Boxberger was named to the 2010 Carolina League Mid-Season All-Star team Thursday as the Hillcats lone representative...The supplemental first round selection from last year's draft is 4-5 with a 3.20 ERA in 12 starts this season...Wednesday night he tossed a career-high seven innings and allowed just one run in earning his fourth victory of the season...It was his first in seven starts (May 3rd) and it snapped a personal four-game losing streak...The right-hander had only gotten through five innings one time in his previous six starts prior to last night...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Brad Peacock was selected by Washington in the 41st round of the 2006 draft out of Palm Beach Central high school in Florida...He made his professional debut in 2007 with the GCL Nationals and went 1-1 with a 3.89 ERA in 13 games (seven starts)...In 2008 he pitched for both full-season Low-A Hagerstown and Short-Season Low-A Vermont...With Hagerstown he went 0-5 with a 9.09 ERA in eight starts with the Suns...In his time with Vermont he had a 4-7 mark with a 3.12 ERA in 14 starts...Last season he returned to Hagerstown and had a 5-8 record with a 4.05 ERA in 19 games (17 starts) before earning a promotion to Advanced-A...In eight games (seven starts) with Potomac he went 3-3 with a 4.34 ERA...This year he has returned to Potomac and has gone 1-7 with a 4.74 ERA in 12 games (11 starts)...Last season he made one start against Lynchburg...He allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings and took a no-decision in a game the Nationals eventually won 3-2 in 11 innings...This season he has made two starts against the Hillcats and has gone a combined 0-1 with 6.97 (eight earned runs in 10 and 1/3 innings)...
