Keys Fall in Mistake Filled Game

In front of the biggest crowd of the season at Harry Grove Stadium, the Keys walked nine batters and committed a season-high five errors en route to an 8-1 loss to the Salem Red Sox. With the loss Frederick dropped their second in a row to Salem and fell to 37-26 on the season. Salem improved to 37-26 with the win.

Saturday night's game did not start off on the right foot. Salem's leadoff hitter, RF Mitch Dening, hit a fly ball to leftfield. LF Xavier Avery dropped the fly ball and Dening reached on the first error of the night. Dening came around to score on a sac fly by 3B Will Middlebrooks. Salem led 1-0 after an inning.

The Red Sox scored two more unearned runs off Zagone in the second. After a one-out walk to Ryan Dent, 1B Jon Hee popped up behind the plate. C Brian Ward dropped the ball as he tried to throw out Dent at first. With new life, Hee connected for his first homerun of the season and Salem led 3-0 on three unearned runs.

Zagone was pulled after two innings of work on Saturday night. He allowed three runs, zero earned, on three hits. He walked two and struck out four in the defeat.

Frederick scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth on a Kyle Hudson RBI single that scored C Brian Ward. Ward's run was his first since he scored since May 10th against Salem. His streak spanned 17 games without a run.

The run in the fourth was the only run the Keys scored on the night. Salem plated five more runs over the evening including three more unearned runs in the eighth innings.

In relief of Zagone, LHP Cole McCurry allowed two runs over five innings and RHP Raul Rivero surrendered three unearned runs over two innings of work.

Salem's Brock Huntzinger improved to 6-3 while Zagone dropped to 3-6. The Keys will try to turn things around in the series finale of the four-game set Sunday night. RHP Ryan Berry (1-0, 2.37) will start for Frederick while Salem will counter with LHP Fabian Williamson (4-3, 4.23). On Sunday, the first 500 fans through the gate will receive an Oriole WebKinz presented by The Frederick News Post. Then following the game will be the Third Annual Diamond Dig presented by Miss Utility in the infield as registered applicants will race on the field to try to dig up the treasure. The diamond is presented by Zaruba & Zaruba LLC. Fireworks will follow the festivities presented by Miss Utility. It is also Sunday Family FunDay presented by Dick's Sporting Goods.
