Potomac Nationals News Release
(LYNCHBURG, VA) The Potomac Nationals were shut out for the second straight night in Lynchburg, this time by a 6-0 tally. The Nats have now been held scoreless in 21 straight innings and will need a victory Sunday to get a split in the four-game series with the Hillcats.
Potomac's run of exposure to major leaguers continued on Saturday night, as 2008 National League All Star Edinson Volquez started on a rehab for Lynchburg. The righthander allowed consecutive singles to Chris Curran and Steve Lombardozzi to open the game, but then slammed the door shut. He retired the next nine Potomac hitters with three strikeouts to complete a successful first step back to The Great American Ballpark.
Brad Peacock was once again the victim of poor run support - and of one bad inning. The righthander had settled into a nice rhythm in the second and third innings; he got six outs (five of them groundouts) on just 19 pitches.
But the Hillcats broke through in the fourth inning. After a one-out double bu Alex Buchholz, Jose Gualdron roped a two-out single to left to end the scoreless tie. They would do even more damage with two outs in the fifth.
After a couple harmless outs to open the frame, Peacock walked Cody Puckett. The Hillcats then rapped out three consecutive hits including two doubles and struck for three runs.
The story on the mound before the game was Volquez, but Jordan Hotchkiss may have one-upped the big leaguer. Hotchkiss tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out eight.
The Cats tacked on two runs in the seventh when Neftali Soto hit a two-run blast to right field, his ninth big fly of 2010.
The Nats will look to get on the scoreboard and earn a series split Sunday at 2:05 P.M. Jesse Estrada makes his second start against the righthander Curtis Partch. The broadcast can be heard beginning at 1:50.
