TONIGHT'S GAME:

The Hillcats open up their final home series of the first half with the first of four games against their Central Virginia rival, the Salem Avalanche...Last night, Lynchburg pounded out a season-high 17 hits in an 8-2 victory over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at Coastal Federal Field...With the win, the Cats now own a 2.0-game divisional lead over the Potomac Nationals...All four Northern Division squads are seperated by a total of 4.5-games in the standings ... Currently, every team in the division posts a losing record...The only time a team advanced to the CL post-season without an above .500 record was in 1985...The Winston-Salem Spirits captured the Southern Division first-half crown with a record of 35-35...Lynchburg is in the midst of playing 15 of their last 19 games in the first half on the road...They are 5-3 to begin that stretch...In addition, all 19 games are against Southern Division squads...Salem enters this series the second hottest team in the Carolina League, winners of seven of their last ten contests....

TONIGHT'S OPPONENT

- Patton, 20, is a 6-1, 185-pound left-hander selected by Houston in the 9th round of the 2004 draft out of Tomball (TX) HS. The Magnolia, TX native compiled a 2-2 record with an impressive 1.93 ERA (28.0, 23 h, 8 r, 6 er, 5 bb, 32 k) in 6 gs with Greeneville (R, Appy) in 2004. He began 2005 with Lexington (A, SAL) and went 5-2, with a 1.94 ERA (78.2 ip, 59 h, 24 r, 17 er, 20 bb, 94 k). He finished the year with Salem, posting a 1-4 record with a 2.63 ERA. As a senior in high school, he was 12-0 with a 0.91 ERA. He struck out 142 hitters in 77.1 innings pitched, while walking 24 and allowing only 24 hits. Patton threw three no-hitters as a senior, including one perfect game, and opponents hit only .122 against him in 2004. After high school, he committed to University of Texas before signing with Houston.

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced today that RHP Kip Wells is scheduled to make a rehab start for the Lynchburg Hillcats on Saturday...Wells has been out since late-February, when he was diagnosed with a circulatory condition in his throwing arm...He had corrective surgery in early March...The last major leaguer to rehab with the Hillcats was OF Adrian Brown in 1999...Brown batted 6-18, .333-0-1 in four Carolina League games...The Hillcats have gone 11-5 in their last 16 games...They have scored 102 runs (6.4/game) over that stretch...INF Brian Bixler has reached base safely in 46 of his last 47 games, batting 57-169, .337-4-26 over that stretch...The Pittsburgh Pirates selected RHP Brad Lincoln with their first selection in the amateur draft on Tuesday...Lincoln, 21, went 12-2 with a 1.69 ERA (127.2ip/24er) in 17 starts this season as a junior with the University of Houston while striking out 151 batters...
