Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Winston-Salem, NC --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (27-34) fell to a season-worst seven games under .500 after dropping a 7-1 game to the Winston-Salem Warthogs (33-27) at Ernie Shore Field on Thursday night. The Rocks led 1-0 early, but the Hogs rallied with a consistent offensive attack, scoring in five of their last six innings for a 7-1 win. With the loss in the opener of this four-game series, the Rocks have lost six of their last seven games.

Wilmington loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning but managed only a single run. Ian Bladergroen earned an RBI with a sac fly to right field, but Jed Lowrie struck out and Andrew Pinckney grounded out to first base to end the inning.

Blue Rocks starter Andrew Dobies (5-3) allowed just one base runner through two innings before Winston-Salem got to him in the third. Jose De Los Santos led off with a double, and two batters later, came home on a Chris Amador RBI single for a 1-1 tie.

The Warthogs took the lead in the fourth. Winston-Salem had runners at second and third with nobody out when David Cook lifted an RBI sac fly to center. Rod Allen, Jr. followed with an RBI single to left for a 3-1 lead.

Wilmington struggled offensively, tying a season-low mark with just three hits in the game. The Rocks sent the minimum number of batters to the plate in five innings for the second straight night and left seven men on base, four in scoring position.

The southpaw went five-plus innings, allowing five runs on a season-worst nine hits and one walk with two strikeouts. After starting the season a perfect 5-0, Dobies has taken a loss in three straight starts.

Winston-Salem tagged on another two runs in the eighth against reliever Scott Shoemaker. Three straight hits with one out, including back-to-back RBI doubles by Allen, Jr. and De Los Santos accounted for the scoring.

Starter Adam Russell (5-2) earned the win with five innings of one-run, two-hit ball, walking four and striking out two.

Right-hander Luis Mendoza (5-3, 3.21) throws against right-hander Lucas Harrell (5-1, 1.95) in game two of this four-game series on Friday night. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
