Clinton LumberKings News Release

Burlington, IA - The rare times the Clinton LumberKings lose a lead late in a game, they seem to always find a way of coming back to win the game. They did it again on Thursday night at Community Field by beating the Burlington Bees, 3-1, in ten innings. With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the tenth inning, Ramon Morla launched a mammoth two-run homer to center field to give Clinton a 3-1 lead. Matt Brazis worked a scoreless bottom of the tenth for his third save and sent Clinton to a series win against their closest competition for the second-half Western Division title. The LumberKings now own a six game lead over the Bees with 11 games remaining in the regular season. The magic number for the division crown is six games and to make the playoffs is three games. Back-to-back doubles by Mike Dowd and Dillon Hazlett gave the LumberKings an early lead in the second inning. The 1-0 gap lasted until the Bees came through with a run in the seventh inning without getting a hit. Seon-Gi Kim was through six shutout innings when he hit Wade Kirkland to lead off the seventh. A sac bunt by Bobby Crocker put Kirkland at second base. Stephen Shackleford came on in relief for Kim and induced a popup by Royce Consigli for the second out. The next batter, Nick Rickles, hit a groundball to second baseman Dillon Hazlett that was misplayed and went into right field. Kirkland raced around to score the tying run on the error. Shackleford buckled down and worked a scoreless eighth and ninth inning, setting up the tenth for Clinton. Clinton owns the best record in the second-half of all Midwest League teams at 38-21 and is now five games under .500 overall after a 23-45 first-half. The LumberKings and Bees play the series finale on Friday night. Left-hander Rusty Shellhorn (1-0, 2.57) gets the ball for Clinton and right-hander A.J. Cole (5-3, 2.10) starts for Burlington. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 at Community Field.
