LumberKings Clinch Playoff Spot

September 5, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

With two games to go in the season, the LumberKings nailed down a playoff berth and moved to within one game of MWL Western Division leader Kane County behind an absolutely brilliant effort from left hander Brian Mattoon (11-6; 2.87).

Mattoon went eight, blanking the Swing on seven hits and a walk, fanning six. The LeMoyne College alum will finish the regular season fifth in the league's ERA race, having fanned 88 and walked just 17 in 131.2 innings of work. His WH/IP for the season is a very good 1.17, which is eighth best in the league.

Clinton got an RBI double from Justin Hatcher and a run-scoring single from Brandon Cashman in the top of the seventh to break a scoreless tie. A sac fly to left by Josh Kreuzer gave Mattoon more cushion than he needed.

Chris Cordeiro (3.14) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth save of the year for the 38-30 LumberKings.
